Written in memory of Joan Dickson a loved and respected cellist and teacher who was a friend and colleague of the composer. The final phrases are played entirely as harmonics on the C string – this is because shortly before she died Joan Dickson wrote to Caroline Bosanquet that she did not understand harmonics and was glad that Caroline had written a book explaining them (now published by SJ Music: The Secret Life of Cello Strings U1996-3) .

Chamber Music Excerpts For Practice- Naughty bits - those tricky passages in chamber music that appear out of nowhere and which can trip you up when it was all going so well even for the violist! The 'naughty bit' might be a passage in a high position possibly in the treble clef a tricky rhythm some awkward and unexpected accidentals or a run of fast notes. But wouldn't life be better if you had had a chance to practise those passages in advance? So here's the solution: a volume of those awkward Viola passages from Beethoven and Mozart String Quartets for you to practise so that you can play them already prepared for those 'naughty bits'. SJ Music also publishes NaughtyBits for cellists from Beethoven's quartets (U1990-2) Haydn quartets (U1989-4) and from quintets sextets and octets from the classical repertoire (U1992-8) and for 2nd violinists from Beethoven quartets (one volume: U1991-2)

This String Quartet has some technical difficulties particularly for the first violinist but the musical result is worth the effort and players familiar with Beethoven's quartets will enjoy playing it. It is one of three Hummel opus 30 quartets published by SJ Music. All three are classical in style and pleasurable to listen to and play and many would say that they have been unjustly neglected. Johann Nepomuk Hummel was a Hungarian pianist conductor and composer born in Pozsony (now Bratislava) in 1778. He died in Weimar in 1837. Mozart heard him play aged seven in Vienna and was so impressed that he offered him lessons and took him to live with him for the next two years. As an adult in Vienna he became good friends with Beethoven.

Brian Newbould completed this quartet movement in 1996. It is a straightforward single movement based on an autograph fragment of what was probably a complete Schubert quartet (A248 in the Library of the Gesell-schaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna). The fragment comprises a slow introduction followed by an Allegro.

In 1882 aged 30 he was one of the founding professors of the Royal College of Music where he taught composition for the rest of his life and where his pupils included rising composers whose fame went on to surpass his own such as Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Four years later he was also appointed Professor of Music at Cambridge University. This String Quintet (with two Violas or three Violins) was composed in 1799. It is tuneful and straightforward and suitable for players who are not yet at the standard required to play the Mozart Dvorak or Brahms quintets with two Violas. This edition has the advantage of having a third Violin part included if two Viola players are not available. Johann Michael Haydn was the younger brother of his much more famous older brother Franz Joseph – commonly regarded as the 'father' of the classical String Quartet format.
