Who Want to Live Forever is a rather grim title given Freddie Mercury’s untimely death but his songs and especially his recordings with Queen will live on forever. The title refers to the immortal Connor MacLeod from the movie Highlander and reached number 24 on the British charts. Now Thijs Oud’s arrangement lets this song live on forever as part of your concert band’s repertoire.

Hercule (Heraklès en grec) le héros mythologique est célèbre pour avoir accompli Douze Travaux particulièrement difficiles. Sa force son courage et sa persévérance devinrent légendaires. Hercules est une œuvre palpitante qui se caractérise par une trame constituée de motifs bien ciselés de rythmes complexes de mélodies fluides et expressives et d’un finale grandiose. Les intervalles de quarte et de quinte qualifiés d’intervalles parfaits servent de base à la structure mélodique. Ils symbolisent la force d’Hercule. Le motif concis extrait de la fanfare d’ouverture se transforme en un thème rythmique énergique qui voyage à travers l’univers de chiffragesde mesures complexes avant de s’évaporer progressivement. On perçoit des échos de trompettes planant au-dessus de la cadence du saxophone soprano qui préfigure l’atmosphère feutrée du mouvement central lent. Une mélodie expressive et ample monte de l’orchestre. Elle s’ouvre avec les sauts de quarte et de quinte initiaux. Après plusieurs pérégrinations harmoniques la musique s’apaise. L’ allegro qui suit développe une fugue dont le thème dérive de la mélodie expressive. Une ligne polyphonique exubérante et bouillonnante flotte au-dessus du sombre ostinato des percussions (en 10/8) et chemine vers la reprise majestueuse du thème du mouvement central. Le finale (presto) est puissant. Chaque motif principal est réexposé. Hercules est un défi pour les musiciens et le chef. La trame foisonnante permet à chacun d’exprimer toutes ses compétences et tout son talent.

Sound Variations is a work comprising of eight short sections each based on a simple theme each characterised by a great variety of styles and sounds. It opens with a fanfare-like introduction that soon leads into the presentation of the main theme followed by five variations on this theme. Each of these variations has its own style: Swing Latin Waltz March and Rock. After a final repeat of the main theme the work comes to an end with a brilliant finale.

Concert suite from the musical Gelmel het land van mijn dromen- A Viking’s Tale tells the story of Gelmel the watchman of a Northern king. It is a suite distilled from Kevin Houben’s large musical spectacle Gelmel containing the most beautiful themes and interesting passages. As in all legends andfairytales various elements including war love princesses and fortresses occur. Beautifully orchestrated for a medium sized band. Let the tale begin!

from Missa Solemnis- Ave Maria an excerpt from the Missa Solemnis was written by André Waignein at the request of the Aosta Valley Regional Council in Italy. Missa Solemnis contains all the musical parts that are used to accompany liturgical rites. However the composer was keen to include an Ave Maria in memory of his mother who was a very religious person and especially revered the Virgin Mary.This Ave Maria reveals a shimmering melody with very discreet orchestral support that allows the vocal or instrumental soloist to express their emotions through exceedingly generous musical phrases. Waignein has made this work for solo soprano or tenor and band butit's also a very beautiful piece for several solo instruments such as flute oboe Bb clarinet alto saxophone or trumpet.The composer naturally dedicated this Ave Maria to his mother.This moving piece will undoubtedly captivate your audience.

Forgotten World pays homage to a former conductor of the orchestra that commissioned this work. It also happens to be the same orchestra that composer Kevin Houben gained some of his early experience in as a conductor. This connection ties together the alternatingly serious and up-beat passages. The main theme contains modern idioms while the jovial passages remind everyone to maintain a healthy balance between work and play.
