Ruht Wohl' is the final Chorus from the St. John Passion and takes the form of a Da Capo Aria with opening ritornello. This beautiful music cri de coeur for the human heart and spirit comes at a dark point in the Passion story yet there is constant play of light and colour hinting at the hope and renewal of Easter. Sweeping melodic lines are a gift for cello and the arrangement retains all counterpoint dramatic episode formal symmetry of the original. Technically accessible to Grade 6 & 7 students 'Ruht Wohl' makes an impressive concert item for Grade 8 and above.

How will Augustine and his Roman monks cope with the English weather? What will Queen Bertha make of their unusual clothes? And will her husband tree-worshipping King Ethelbert allow them to stay? The Conversion Job tells the incredible story as originally told in the writings of The Venerable Bede (673-735) with the welcome addition of music and a good dose of humour. This compelling cantata contains parts for the following main characters: Speaking Only: The Venerable Bede (Narrator) Acting/Singing: Gregory Augustine The Monks Acting Only: Ethelbert The King of Kent and Bertha The Queen of Kent Whilst the first performance of The Conversion Job included a cast of over 300 children other performances presented in a variety of creative ways have since been given by much smaller groups with equal success. Three Short Pieces for Woodwind was composed in 2004 as an entry for the 60x60 competition organised by Vox Novus who were looking to promote 60 pieces each lasting no more than 60 seconds. As part of the competition selection process the ThreePieces were broadcast on WBAR Radio New York in August 2004. Subsequently Nocturne (the second of the pieces) was chosen for performance in various European concerts organised by Vox Novus. The obvious challenge in composing these pieces wasfinding a way of stating an idea and developing it within the span of one minute. For the first piece I adopted a neo-Baroque style writing a fairly strict fugue complete with stretto pedal point etc. The second piece is a complete contrast tothe first exploiting long sustained melodic lines. The final piece is different again making use of almost percussive rhythms and assymetric time signatures.
