In the composer's own words Keep in Touch is a lament a sort of chaconne divided up into sections by more freely-composed cadenzas for the Viola .' The electronic CD supplied with the sheet music includes bluesy singing from Antony Hegarty among other sounds and Muhly clearly relishes the inbetweenness' of the singing and the falsetto of the Viola. Muhly 's music in this piece plays freely with time and key in a postmodernist way making the ultimate solitude of the Viola touching. The score calls for a boy Soprano for the role of the Prince a baritone for the Pilot eight other solo roles and a Chorus of twenty children to sing the parts of stars and birds. It is scored for Orchestra plus harp and celesta. The libretto has been sensitively adapted by Olivier Award winning playwright Nicholas Wright among whose works are Vincent in Brixton and The Custom of the Country. Of The Little Prince The New York Times's critic Bernard Holland said Ms Portman's work lifts words in the air and carries them along ' a most appropriate accolade for this work.Simple but profound the story of The Little Prince and the philosophical lessons foradults is loved the world over. In 2003 Rachel Portman composer of music for nearly one hundred films and television shows and an Oscar-winner - in fact the first female composer ever to win Best Musical or Comedy Score for Emma in 1996 - premiered her adaptation of this charming timeless tale to uniformly positive reviews. Nico Muhly 's Time After Time scored for Soprano Saxophone Marimba and Percussion. The work was composed in 2003 and lasts around 8 minutes. Time After Time was composed for the Yesaroun’ Duo (comprising multi-percussionist Sam Solomon & saxophonist Eric Hewitt) and marimbist Nancy Zeltsman. Muhly states that he set out to write a piece that was primarily energetic and rhythmically challenging enough for two percussionists and one honorary percussionist to play. The title refers to the fact that all the material recycles itself at different speeds. The Marimba’s long quasi-chorale lines proceed initially without noticing the rhythmic shifts and upheaval below. Halfway through the piece a jagged Marimba solo features the instrument’s precise dance-like qualities and after being joined by the Saxophone and Percussion propels the whole ensemble towards the rhythmic and harmonic excesses of the final section.

I Know Where Everything Is is a cycle of chords in a pile. Each chord has a series of possible voicings and a series of possible quick ornamentations. The piece starts with the most moderate of these works through the slower more languid variations and then concludes energetically and aggressively. Nico Muhly ’s prelude for his friend the Rev'd James Mustard features slow-moving harmonies with a breathy warmth but it’s through a sparkling crystalline pane of arpeggios. Nico Muhly has an almost incomparable understanding of the capabilities of the Pipe Organ as a musical instrument but also an equally deep understanding of and even affection for its limitations making his Organ pieces extremely unique. Wish You Were Here written for the Boston Pops pays homage to Colin McPhee one of the first western musicologists to study Balinese gamelan as well as to the great illustrators Carl Barks and Herge (responsible for Donald Duck & Tintin respectively). Muhly has written a completely romantic and fanciful gamelan-influenced piece. On top of this twittery and excited music a long lonesome melody unfolds. After a desolate interlude with severe ship's-horn brass the energetic patterns start again and the long line returns this time with a triumphant revelatory ending. Arranged for orchestra this piece has a duration of approximately 8 minutes. For Tenor Violin And Drone-Three Songs was expertly composed by Nico Muhly . There is a two-note drone that sounds throughout this piece’s 15-minute duration. In the first part of the songs the Tenor and the Violin exchange lyrical and declamatory statements. The second part is a song without words: a sort of dance for solo Violin. The third part has the Violin intoning a pair of notes while the tenor sings in essence a list. The work was commissioned by violinist Tatiana Berman on French surrealist poems of her choosing and was premiered at the Constella Festival in Cincinnati in 2012. Commissioned by the Master and Fellows of St John's College Cambridge it was first performed by St John's College Choir on 29th May 2016. A full performance lasts around 7.5 minutes. 'The American composer Nico Muhly has often spoken of his love of the early English church music which he sang as a choirboy and his recent choral works include a Third Service composed for St John's College Cambridge. (Given his love of music by Thomas Weelkes we can perhaps hope for at least six more.) This setting though has nothing to do with the early English repertoire and is in a bold modern idiom more akin to Tippett's famous setting for St. John's. The Organ plays a varied and independent role throughout sometimes with dynamics that are quite different to those in the voice parts. The Organ part is sometimes written on two staves without further comment and it's not entirely clear what is required between pages 3 and 4 where three staves become two. The vocal parts include some modest vocal effects and there are Soprano and Alto solos in the Nunc dmittis. The Gloria of the Nunc is a varied repeat of the Magnificat Gloria together with a subtly reworked conclusion to match the general mood of the movement. - Geoffrey Webber Choir & Organ Magazine

POD-Nico Muhly's Pulses Cycles Clouds for large mixed Percussion ensemble was written for the 50th anniversary of the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. At its core it is a group of four marimbas surrounded by various bells and other mallet instruments; unpitched instruments here are primarily played by an ensemble of amateur percussionists. The piece obsesses over a cycle of eleven chords introduced slowly through the beginning of the piece. Each chord is announced by a large vertical moment with bells vibraphone and a sudden shift in tonality. The four marimbas then relax into a series of soft interlocking patterns over which an ensemble of glockenspiels and crotalesplays a simple rhythm in a complex relationship to the other instruments. Eventually the pulse disintegrates entirely into a vision of a night sky; insects unexpected interruptions - a walk around a quiet landscape. Eventually the pulse returns but nocturnally subdued. The piece is meant to echo in its way the thrill of community music making the joy of sharing a pulse and the various connections both rhythmic and interpersonal I made at BUTI two decades ago. - Nico Muhly Nico Muhly 's Pulses Cycles Clouds for large mixed Percussion ensemble was written for the 50th anniversary of the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Nico Muhly 's My Days for ATTB choir and five Viola Da Gambas. Full score. This 16 minute piece of sheet music was commissioned by Wigmore Hall and the world première was performed by Fretwork and Hilliard Ensemble at Wigmore Hall October 2 2012. ' My Days is a ritualised memory piece about Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) written for two ensembles whose recordings informed so much of my musical development. I feel like I spend half of my life trying to trick string players to play like Fretwork and vocalists to singlike the Hilliard Ensemble so it was with enormous pleasure that I composed this piece. The text is derived from Psalm 39 which Gibbons himself set as well as anaccount of Gibbons's own autopsy which is a poignant 17th century semi-anonymous text. One of the most thrilling things about the sound of five violas da gamba playing together is the sense of their phrasing being derived from vocal music but made somehow electric and ecstatic through ornamentation and the friction of the strings. The piece has an idée fixe based on a minor scale with two possible resolutions and many ornaments. In between iterations the voices in rhythmic unison intone the psalm. It isn't until the autopsy text arrives that the voices begin to split into more elaborate ‘Gibbonsy’ verses and responses. A series of semiimprovisedfragments on the text Take thy plague away from me introduces the third section of the piece where plucked strings create a halo around the text hear my prayer OLord. The piece ends with the ornaments wildly exploded over the voices singing two words endlessly repeated. ' - Nico Muhly Nico Muhly 's My Days for ATTB choir and five Viola Da Gambas. Full score. Muhly fell in love with Byrd's setting of the Christmas words Senex Puerum Portabat as a chorister so much that the fluidity of the lines the relentless lilting rhythm and the way Byrd both avoided and cradled the text' that he was inspired to follow a life in music. Early in his career he set the same text in modern style. The first statement of the words is a capella with ecstatic brass entering in the restatement. Nico Muhly 's The Sweets Of Evening (2006) was written for Dianne Berkun and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. This work is for children's voices and Piano. Having worked with this group of musicians many times before Muhly was honored to finally write them a piece. Having sung in a boy choir himself Muhly is fascinated and intimate with the changing nature of young voices and looked for a text that is itself transitory - in this instance depicting the movement between dusk and night. A great fan of Christopher Smart's poetry and particularly of Benjamin Britten's setting of fragments from Jubilate Agno; Muhly's settingnods to Britten in its episodic nature and generosity towards the singers. The Sweets of Evening lasts six and one half minutes. Nico Muhly - The Sweets Of Evening by musicroom
