Johann Sebastian Bach did not write any cello concertos. Or did he? Many of his music manuscripts disappeared after his death. Included in that lost treasure may have been a couple of cello concertos. Bach wrote six suites for cello and three sonatas for viola da gamba so yes why not a cello or a gamba concerto? A prolific editor and arranger for the organ Best also composed church music carols glees piano music orchestral pieces as well as works for the organ. Major works for the 'King of Instruments' include 'Four Concert Fantasias' of which 'Fantasia on a Welsh March' is number two in the set. Based on the Welsh tune 'Men of Harlech' it subjects the march to virtuosic treatment that makes demands on both player and instrument. It is a fine work and worthy of inclusion in any recital programme.

Music for SATB chorus occupies an important place in Rhian Samuel 's catalogue of works from the early carols written in the USA 'Jolly Wat the Shepherd' of 1970 and 'So Long Ago' (1st Prize Greenwich Festival 1979) to her most recent anthems for the Choir of New College Oxford. In her songs vocal chamber music and choral compositions she has explored an impressive range of poetry from anonymous 14th-century Welsh texts and traditional Japanese verse to Emily Dickinson Samuel Beckett and contemporary poets including Anne Stevenson. Samuel 's three 'Jacobean Lyrics' of 1979 included a simple canonic account of George Herbert's 'I got me flowers'. Thisnew a cappella setting returns to the poet's sublime devotional verse reflecting the dialogue structure of ' Love Bade Me Welcome ' through expressive contrasts of material and vocal ensemble.

Ar y Mynydd Prydferth Cymreig (On The Beautiful Welsh Mountain) is a colourful programmatic piece in three short movements depicting scenes of Welsh mountains valleys caves and a hero armed only with his trusty cornet encounters a legendary red dragon. Ar y Mynydd Prydferth Cymreig was highly commended by the judges in the first Stainer & Bell Award for Brass Composition held at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff in May 2010.
