The Heritage of Children is a superb work by Betty Roe for Solo Soprano SATB choir children’s choir Oboe and Organ. Ten fantastic works by various poets have been beautifully set to music; including William Blake Ben Jonson William Wordsworth and Charles Causley. This work was commissioned by Liz and Brian Marcel to mark the adoption of their Roumanian daughter Jessica. It was first performed on November 20th 1994 at St. James Norlands Church London.

Koanga - La Calinda-The Creole Dance La Calinda from Koanga arranged for Cello and Piano by Christopher Palmer. Delius’ romantic third opera Koanga produced a number of interesting pieces infused with sensuality and notable for its nostalgic and folkish languor. Fenby’s orchestral arrangement was a stripped down affair and it is this version that is most performed and recorded and forms the basis of Palmer’s arrangement.

This mini-musical began life as a workshop project commissioned by June Keyte for late-teenage children at Kingsmead School Enfield. The three main characters are a contented boy an uncertain girl and a disillusioned person who can be a boy or a girl. The chorus can be any size. The part of the porter is a solo voice taken from the chorus. The staging and costumes can be as simple or elaborate as you wish but the opening and closing scenes must in some way represent a railway carriage with the three main characters sitting side by side. The piece offers some scope for the insertion of other songs about London to extend the performance in appropriate circumstances. Destination London is ideal for a school or youth group looking for a substantial item in a mixed programme or a group not yet ready to tackle a full-scale musical. The accompaniment can be piano alone but the addition of double bass percussion or any other instruments would add to the overall effect.

Pasticcio On A Theme Of Mozart-Percy Turnbull born near Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1902 had his earliest musical training as a cathedral chorister. At the RCM in the 1920s Turnbull studied with Vaughan Williams Holst and John Ireland. Turnbull was a highly accomplished pianist and spent much of his life earning his living as an accompanist performer and teacher. His understandng of the instrument and his extremely wide knowledge of the piano repertoire led him to produce highly varied and colourful output. His interests were almost entirely for miniature forms: suites preludes studies variations and character pieces. All of these pieces be they athletically virtuoso or deftly simple show a flair forthe idiom and perhaps more importantly they lend an historically significant and stylistically interesting perspective to the literature of twentieth-century British piano music.

Composed in 1917 Warlock’s An Old Song is an atmospheric piece based on a Highland folk-song that has been transcribed for B Flat clarinet and Piano by John Mitchell.
