Carl Nielsen Edition
Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) was a Danish musician often seen as his country’s greatest composer. While his operas and songs have become embedded in the cultural heritage of his native Denmark internationally he is better known for his symphonies and concertos – distinguished by his prominent use of Brass instruments and dramatic changes in tonality. His Symphony No.5 (Op. 50 FS. 97) was composed in 1922 and is often seen as his “War Symphony” despite the composer denying any such direct influence. Strangely it is formed of only two movements and does not have any title. Often said to be a modernist piece it is constantly restless some would say pulsating. Brought to fame byLeonard Bernstein in 1962 scholars and musicians are still trying to understand this enigmatic work. Symphony No.5 Op.50 was composed by Carl Nielsen in 1922. Pour Saxophone Soprano et Piano / for Solo Saxophone and Piano- André Jolivet 's Chant de Linos for Saxophone and Piano (arrangement: Carmen Lefrançois ). Captivated by the magical and religious dimension of music André Jolivet (1905-1971) couldn't help but have a predilection for the Flute a deep expression of humankind (…) that charges sounds with what in us is both visceral and cosmic. Eight years after the famous Incantations for solo Flute in 1936 he wrote the Chant de Linos for Flute and Piano. Its pedagogical purpose - as an examination piece for national Conservatoire students - does not mask itsgravity: in Ancient Greece it was a funeral lamento originally sung in memory of the poet Linos who lost his life to Apollo's jealousy. In 1945 the composer transformed this piece into a powerfully charming quintet for Flute Violin Viola Cello and Harp. The Editions Leduc are publishing a transcription for Soprano Saxophone and Piano written by Carmen Lefrançois and approved by Christine Jolivet the composer's daughter. Lefrançois beautifully avoids smothering the delicacy of the music with the Saxophone's dynamics which could prove excessive in this context. The threnody interspersed with ritual dances retains its strange beauty touching the hearts of a new generation of musicians.

This Sonata begins with an Allegro ben moderato featuring a high melody played pianissimo in triple time. The piano comes to the fore in the second movement marked Allegro though it has a slower middlesection. A short 'Recitativo-Fantasia' has both instruments really integrating and playing off each other then fading to nothing whereas the last movement Allegretto poco mosso is loud and declamatory with a persistentmelody. This edition is edited by James Galway.
