“Prélude á l’aprés-midi d’un faune” often referred to as the first composition of the “modern” era is one of Debussy’s most popular and frequently performed orchestral works. The piece comes down to us in an array of sources and several important ones are drawn upon for the first time in Bärenreiter’s new scholarly-critical edition. Most of the currently available editions are based on the first edition from 1895 which however contains many engraver errors. When the corresponding orchestral parts are also taken into consideration countless discrepancies are revealed. Bärenreiter’s Urtext edition incorporates readings of a printed copy of the scorefrom c. 1908 which shows corrections and emendations by the composer. These important changes found in no other source include metronome markings different pitches and additional notes as well as added tempo and articulation markings which all subtly enhance Debussy’s finely sculpted work. There is even a breath mark added to the famous solo flute passage which opens the work. Composer Philip Sparke is fascinated by the early history of the American west in particular the incredible expedition undertaken by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark who were despatched by President Thomas Jefferson in the first decade of the nineteenth century to map the headwaters of the Missouri River and establish a route to the Pacific: a two-year journey that led them across the uncharted Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. Big Sky Overture depicts the vastness and beauty of this area and will bring a feel of the Wild West to any concert.

A Miniature Tone Poem for Band-This miniature tone poem for concert band is a sequel of Benjamin Yeo's earlier work Flight . Voyage to the End of the Earth depicts a voyage by ship across the sea. The music expresses the calm of the sea before the ship sets sail towards the horizon. The ringing of the ship's bell and the blowing of the ship's horn signal the start of the journey. Now we hear the lyrical song of the sea with lovely views of the ocean accompanied by whale song and seagull calls. Let yourself succumb to Mother Nature's beauty through this music! The piano part in this composition is optional.

Variations on Ein' feste Burg-Between the Two Rivers was commissioned by Fanfare ‘Prins Hendrik’ from Aalst in the Netherlands. The title derives from the fact that the town of Aalst lies between two tributaries of the River Dommel. The community is a highly religious one so the famous Luther chorale Ein’ Feste Burg was an obvious choice for Philip Sparke to use as the theme for this new work. It takes the form of a theme with four contrasting variations. Variation 1 is a moto perpetuo variation 2 has a slower march like feel variation 3 is a sinister slow movement and the final variation is in the form of a lyrical fugue. Between The Two Rivers is sure to become a major work in modern brass bandrepertoire.
