This title is taken from the compilation French Songs And Choruses For Mixed-Voice Choir (NOV165198) While not as overtly demanding as Apres un reve perhaps the most difficult of Faure's songs this composition requires not only a sense of line and of delicacy but rarely supplies the exact pitch to the singer before he or she embarks on the highly exposed vocal lines. The accompaniment often does supply the pitch right after the singer which makes it easy for the singer to correct any misteps--and for the audience to notice problems. The accompaniment is typical Faure with almost constant use of arpeggios and almost no heavy chords giving the feeling of transparency thatcharacterizes so many of his songs. The vocal lines are equally graceful and typically Faure in flowing descending phrases. An important and significant work written in London in 1942 and now published for the first time: 60 years later! The first movement is tuneful and full of those surprises Malcolm loves to introduce in his music. There are no shortage of jazz inspired ideas coloured always by that Arnold 'edge'. The second movement is a fiendish scherzo - full of amazing cross rhythms and of immense energy. The final movement is a March and the most emotionally charged. Clearly very strongly anti-war - severe and angry dissonances mocking fanfares angular and brutal melodic and rhythmic shapes. 'A very playable work...with plenty of interest for all the players. A greataddition to the repertoire!' AWT Grade: 8

George Nicholson's Launch for Bass Clarinet String Quartet and Piano. Composed May 2018. Duration: 1 minute Premiered 26 April 2018 by Sarah Watts Jonathan Ayerst and the Ligeti Quartet. Programme Note: This piece was composed to mark the inauguration of the Centre for New Music at Sheffield (CeNMaS). It was one of several 'microcosmic' pieces written by postgraduate students and staff composers of the University of Sheffield for that occasion to be presented as a continuous sequence of very brief instrumental and electroacoustic works. The beginning of any new venture impliespotential and possibility; borne of optimism it invokes hope for the future. It was with these thoughts in mind that I set out in Launch to fill a minute of playing time with as much activity as possible.

The Menuett the Deutscher Tanz the Kontretanz and the Ecossaise were extraordinarily popular social dances during Beethoven’s lifetime. Thus along with sonatas and variations Beethoven on numerous occasions composed easy-to-play dances and dance collections for solo piano which are brought together in their entirety for the first time in our volume. Beethoven did not give these occasional pieces an opus number so today they are numbered only as WoO (Werke ohne Opus or works without opus). A few dances are piano arrangements of orchestral dances since piano reductions for home music-making were indispensable at that time. As is to be expected from a substantial Urtextedition the preface and Critical Notes for this important collection deal with the complex source situation of the individual pieces along with the question of the authenticity of these piano arrangements. This accurate and authoritative Henle Urtext edition contains the complete Dances for Piano by Ludwig van Beethoven.

A piano piece in E flat major with the simple title ‘Lied’ (song) was Felix Mendelssohn’s surprise present to his sister Fanny on her birthday on 14 November 1828. Shortly afterwards she referred to the work as ‘Song without Words’ and probably coined the phrase under which her brother’s lyrical piano pieces numbering nearly 50 are known today. The present edition contains in addition to the 48 well-known ‘Songs without Words’ a number of individual compositions which because of their title or character seem to fit the classification ‘Song without Words’. These and the above mentioned first example of 1828 are united in this essential compilation of works in a genre favouredby the composer. An enriching addition to the piano repertoire of interest for teaching as well as for recital purposes.
