Prefazione di Giampaolo Pretto-Flautist composer and conductor Giampaolo Pretto has been pursuing a long and varied artistic career as the first flute of the RAI National Orchestra a member of the Quintetto Bibiena and as soloist musical director of the Turin Philharmonic Orchestra and many other roles. Protagonist of numerous recordings and radio and television broadcasts he has long been the didactic director of the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana. Passionate about teaching in 2013 he published Dentro il Suono a text that gave rise to a homonymously-named flute school.

The Cantabile in D major for violin and piano (M.S. 109) is one of Paganini’s most popular and famous compositions. This brief piece - a short tripartite ‘aria variata’ - is particularly spontaneous and lighthearted reminiscent of the lyricalnature of the Italian bel canto tradition. It has an intimate feel to it bringing us closer to this composer from Genoa. The main aim of this critical edition based on the autograph source held at the Casanatense Library in Rome and collated withall the key printed editions is to provide both performers and scholars with a text containing a philologically authoritative original reading.

During his lifetime composer Piano manufacturer and publisher Ignaz Pleyel bestowed upon the world of music an almost unimaginable number of published compositions some of them in multiple arrangements too. Of those what has remained in the repertoire today are primarily works for small chamber ensembles.
