Tombeau – which takes its title from the central elegy of the work – was composed 1966-69. Its form is a series of fairly specific technical studies interspersed with variations. The introduction provides a sort of ‘trailer’ in which each phrase of the theme is punctuated by a brief quote from the ensuing studies (heard in reverse order). This scheme is balanced by that of the finale which is also punctuated by short ‘flashbacks’. Tombeau was written as a tribute to certain composers for the piano notably Schumann and Szymanovsky and to a style of playing that has now become almost ‘historic’. It is also a tribute to our beloved masters many of them obscure who made usmusicians. It is therefore in many senses a retrospective work the last of a phase undertaken just before a fairly drastic re-evaluation of techniques ideas and intentions. It is dedicated to Stephen Kovacevich who commissioned it and gave its first performance on the BBC Third Programme and subsequently at Dartington Hall Summer School. for Solo Trumpet Winds and Percussion-The word nexus is defined as a tie or link between people and events. Nexus for solo trumpet and band includes several links between composer James Curnow and educator Alfred Watkins to whom the work is dedicated. A well-known theme (particularly to Mr. Watkins' students) is drawn upon as the piece utilizes two primary musical settings - an energetic and agile scherzo that appears in the beginning and again at the end contrasted with an expressive Ballad theme. The soloist at the premiere (and on the recording) is Christopher Watkins Alfred's son. This is a well-crafted and rewarding work for soloist and band alike. Dur: 6:00 (Recorded by the University of Alabama atBirmingham Wind Symphony - Dr. Sue Samuels conductor. Christopher Watkins trumpet soloist.)

This 3-part work begins with a martial and heroic theme where the brass and drums play an important role. A second melodic theme contrasts with the first although elements of the first theme remain clearly present and they in turn provide a link to the second calmer movement which is introduced with a splendid solo on the saxophone. You can hear fragments of the first part here too.In the third part the small drum begins to play the background theme and is followed by a grand group of brass instruments playing a heavy concert march which after an increase of tempo gradually ends in a grand finale which refers once again to the initial theme.

The grandeur of the mountain is felt by an opening section of octaves in the LH and forte triads played with both hands.
