Swedish/English- ' My music is my own and I have never tried to be original. That has always been my motto and I have only tried to use music to express all the feelings which life has to offer. This has led people to describe my music as “so sad that it sounds like birds who have lost their wings” but also as “the happiest classical music that we have ever heard”. My compositions are almost all sacred. They express not only my own faith but also my appreciation and respect for the timeless texts that have been used for centuries and centuries. ' - Mårten Jansson Mårten Jansson (b. 1965) elected member of the Föreningen svenska tonsättare (the Societyof Swedish Composers) graduated from the Royal College of Music Stockholm (KHM) with an MFA degree in Music Education Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Voice. For more than ten years he was the music director and conductor of Carmen one of the most prominent womens’ Vocal ensembles in Sweden. He currently teaches Choral conducting and music theory as well as giving Vocal tuition at the Bolandgymnasiet and Musikskolan in his home town of Uppsala. The Royal Swedish Court commissioned Maria (IV) for the celebration of the Mass on Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary (March 17 2013). The music depicts Mary’s sorrow as the mother of a child that belongs not to her but to all mankind.

Oratorio in three parts- Messiah occupies a unique position in Handel ’s work. Even if it does not represent the absolute zenith – several other oratorios could challenge it in this respect – its strongly universal character and directness of expression which appeal to men of all creeds make it the most renowned work in the whole of the composer’s monumental output. That this oratorio is unquestionably a work of individual character is shown by all its features: its material which presents liturgical traditions alongside popular elements; its structure which combines an ever-changing variety of elements from opera cantata concerto and anthem; its musicalorganization which at once unifies and dramatically juxtaposes the various styles. All are united in an extraordinary manner with great artistry most accomplished technique and superb invention. But Stars Remaining was written in 1970 for the English soprano Jane Manning. It sets lines from two poems by Cecil Day-Lewis bringing them together to create a scena lasting some seven minutes. It is an aubade or dawn love-song; it begins with outward extravert energy and moves to an inward intimate centre. It closes as the imagery moves out again to the expanse of the sky at first light.

An American Song is a collage that portrays the motto e pluribus unum by combining several dozen American tunes into a single whole. Fragments of hymns spirituals show tunes jazz standards country and western ballads folk songs and classical compositions are set into the collage like thin translucent glazes producing a musical surface that evokes the greatness and the struggle inherent in the American identity at times clearly and at times dimly through a haze of memory and association.Symphonic Band (full score).
