Rachmaninov premiered the Piano Concerto No. 3 Op. 30 in New York with the New York Symphony Orchestra led by Walter Damrosch on November 28 1909. The following January he played it with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Gustav Mahler. This a deep work which is full of virtuosic hurdles and lengthy cadenzas. Today this concerto carries the nickname of Rach 3 and has become the most popular choice among piano competition candidates wanting to perform a virtuoso display piece. This particular work is a reduction for two pianos.

Typically bands that play at this level have some Clarinet players who are comfortable above the break and others who are not. By staying below the break throughout this light and spirited Clarinet section feature let’s you give the entire section a bit of the limelight. This is a perfect vehicle to help your Clarinet section learn to shape a phrase and the cheerful melody let’s you program this piece anywhere you like. It’s also a good selection to use to take the pressure off Brasses before a particularly taxing major work. Remind the critically important Clarinet section that you value their efforts as much as any other section. Breezy!

Daryl Runswick's Follow Follow for Piano and String Quintet. Follow Follow is so-called because it contains canons (or rounds) where the players quite literally follow one another. The piece begins with a gentle melody played first by one person then after a dreamy piano ripple by everyone as a round. A second melody is given the same treatment after which a third is played first by the strings then by the piano. Finally the very first melody returns with a hint of regret. - Daryl Runswick Commission made possible by Robert and Diana Justham to celebrate their first wedding anniversary.

from Islas y Montañas-Shelley Hanson originally composed Islas y Montañas for orchestra. Tocata is the first movement and functions as a fanfare or introduction. It features the entire ensemble clapping rhythmic patterns based on the Cuban 3/2-clave rhythm. It's a great way to get the crowd ready for La Tumba de Alejandro Garcia Caturla originally the fourth movement from Islas y Montañas. It is beautifully transcribed here for concert band. It is a musical rumination about Cuban composer Alejandro Garcia Caturla (1906-1940) who studied with Nadia Boulanger but was later assassinated while presiding as a judge. It opens with a haunting English horn cadenza (alternate cueing provided) followed byharmonic shifts intense soli writing and driving rhythms that sweep through the ensemble.
