from L'elisir d'amore-Una Furtiva Lagrima is a brilliant arrangement by Jacob de Haan of the aria from Gaetano Donizetti’s opera L’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love) for concert band. The subject of this song is the power of love: Nemorino the main character of the opera sings the aria as he notices that his love potion is starting to take effect on his beloved. A furtive tear (Una Furtiva Lagrima) betrays his beloved’s feelings towards him in this emotional piece.

A Christmas Fantasy on Themes by Bach & Handel-In his own distinctive style Robert van Beringen has composed a very unique fantasy on three themes by the famous Baroque composers Johann Sebastian Bach and George Friedrich Händel. Van Beringen used Bach’s chorale Brich an o schönes Morgenlicht (‘Break forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light’) from his Christmas Oratorio and the recitative Behold a Virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Emmanuel God with Us from Händel’s Messiah . A perfect way to say Merry Christmas in music!

The brevity of Lili Boulanger's life (1893-1918) does not obsecure its substantial achievements. With the cantata 'Faust et Helene' (1913) she became the first woman to win the Prix De Rome and several large projects including 'D'un Matin De Printemps' and its companion piece 'D'un Soir Triste' both in various scorings followed during the last five years of her life. 'D'un Matin De Printemps' is remarkable for its sharpness and vigour: Lili's textures and harmonic language place her music in the French mainstream of the period while her sensitivity to the expressive character and technical demands of the violin are in evidence throughout this striking piece. This new authoritative performing edition by musicologist and performer Neil Heyde is an invaluable addition to the French early 20th century repertory for the instrument. The edition includes a full introduction and critical commentary.

The Celtic was written as David Heath's second work as composer in residence with the BT Scottish Ensemble. It is dedicated to the ensemble's musical director violinist Clio Gould who gave the premiere in 1995. The concerto is in three movements each with its own story. The first movement Ceilidh captures the atmosphere of a ceilidh getting wilder and wilder as everyone gets intoxicated on the 'atmosphere'. The second movement is a Lament for Collessie: during the autumn of 1994 Heath's family had to move back to London and they all really missed Collessie Fife where they had lived for a year. Lament for Collessie is a slow movementwhich expresses these feelings. In 1994 one of the great craftsmen of the century flute-maker Albert Cooper was 70 and Heath wanted to write a piece to celebrate his birthday. Living in Cupar Fife Heath decided to base the piece on an old version of a popular local song 'The Wee Cooper of Fife'. As Albert lives in Clapham (London) it became The Cooper of Clapham. The Celtic has been recorded by Clio Gould & the BT Scottish Ensemble on Linn CKD073 and by Ittai Shapira & the English Chamber Orchestra on Black Box BBM1083

The Dreaded Groove and Hook is an up-tempo acid-jazz number that draws inspiration from bands like Jamiroquai and The Youngblood Brass Band. The groove in question is the main tune that is shared round the band whilst the hook in pop' terms is the catchy bit of the song. The whole band joins in to play a huge riff' that acts as a chorus to the jazz-like verses. The piece was commissioned by Jason Katsikaris and The Leyland Band who gave the first performance as part of their programme for the Brass In Concert Championships held at The Sage Gateshead on the 16th November 2008. The work has subsequently recorded by thesame band and conductor on the CD entitled Penlee . Brass Band Grade 5: 1st Section Duration: 4 minutes
