As performed by Tina Turner- Simply the Best was first performed by the little known Bonnie Tyler in 1988 but did not gain wide-spread popularity until Tina Turner recorded it barely one year later. The song has become one of Tina Turner’s all time greatest hits and is a favourite around the world when something needs celebrating. Ron Sebregts’ arrangement really rocks and will make sure your next concert is Simply the Best !

From 1965 this classic by the Beatles showcases the purity of a cappella voices highlighting the beauty and longing of this expressive song. The opening and closing are largely homophonic with a quasi-Baroque middle section adding interest. Harmonic freshness and occasional rhythmic extensions of the lyric highlight the text in a way that enhances the poetry. For pop jazz and concert choirs.

Un hommage au sculpture Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi- Le Lion de Belfort was composed for the official inauguration of the sculpture Le Lion de Belfort : an enormous red sandstone lion that dominates the landscape of the French city of Belfort. This 22 metre long and 11 metre high lion symbolises the heroic French resistance during the Prussian siege of Belfort in 1870-1871. The composer added a narrator and three-part choir to the concert band instrumentation who utilise texts written specially for the occasion by Jean Ehret. The work’s première took place at the inauguration of Le Lion de Belfort on 28 November 2010 130 years after sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) completed the statue.

Composed for Steven Isserlis in 2004 Carl Vine’s Cello Concerto is an exhilarating 20-minute work that traverses a vast emotional palette. The Concerto begins arrestingly with soloist pitted against orchestra though as it develops the two factions move towards union. A slow chorale led by the cellist frames the central section whilst relentless motor rhythms drive the work to its close. Since early Victorian times music in church has lagged increasingly behind the developments in the secular field. The New Catholic Hymnal includes a number of new settings which are nearer the technique and spirit of the day than was hitherto customary. Whilst most congregations would baulk at contemporary dodecaphonic music simple diatonic dissonance and other modern styles are refreshingly acceptable and inject a new spirit into congregational singing.
