Transcribed by popular brass arranger Robert King this edition of Giovanni Gabrieli 's Canzon septimi toni No. 1 provides an exciting performance piece for a large Brass Ensemble. Being one of the most influential musicians during the shift from the Renaissance to the Baroque era it is no secret that the composer leaned himself primarily to vocal and sacred works. However his Canzon septimi toni No. 1 represents an important turn not only in the composer's career but in musical history. Composed in 1597 this piece paved the way to what would soon become the new Baroque concerto style which remains popular to thisday. King's arrangement of this historical work is indispensable for Brass Ensembles.

American composer organist and harpsichordist Daniel Pinkham (1923-2006) studied the Organ and music theory at Phillips Academy in Andover before studying at Harvard. His Christmas Cantata is an exciting addition to the choral repertoire. Pinkham was famously moved by a concert in Andover given by the Trapp family singers in 1939 soon after they had escaped Austria. He quoted 'Here suddenly I was hearing clarity simplicity. It shaped my whole outlook.' Pinkham s career saw him teach at the Boston Conservatory and the New England Conservatory of Music as well as being organist of Kings Chapel inBoston for 42 years. His compositions varied from symphonies to art songs althought predominantly his music was religious in nature frequently incorporating a choir and Organ. Christmas Cantata represents Pinkham s influence of 20th-Century trends often embracing plainchant joining Stravinsky and Hindemiths revival of early music. For all aspiring choirs seeking varied modern repertoire Christmas Cantata provides an exciting performance work.

Cette soif de transmission se retrouve intacte dans ce qu’il faut bien nommer l’œuvre d’une vie : le Traité de rythme de couleur et d'ornithologie qui regroupe l’ensemble de ses recherches théoriques et analytiques depuis 1949 jusqu’à sa mort. C’est à la veuve du compositeur Yvonne Loriod que revient le mérite d’avoir remis en ordre cette somme respectant le plan en sept tomes prévu par l’auteur. Publié en 1995 chez Leduc le 2e volume transporte le lecteur ébloui dans « des contrées merveilleuses imaginaires inconnues de la tradition académique » (Alain Louvier) : les rythmes non-rétrogradables (deux groupes rythmiques symétriques autour d’une partie centrale) les développements par élimination interpolations canons et pédales rythmiques constituent autant de techniques que Messiaen rend limpides. On y trouve aussi des morceaux de choix : les célèbres analyses consacrées au Sacre du Printemps de Strawinsky et à sa propre Turangalîla-Symphonie. Conçu par un esprit universel curieux de tout ce traité exhale un souffle d’absolu.
