Such was the advice of Déodat de Séverac to the young Joseph Canteloube de Malaret (1879-1957) when the latter shared his dismay at the petty squabbles taking over the Parisian music scene in the Belle-Epoque. Although Canteloube had started collecting folk songs from his native Cantal in 1895 he only began the harmonisation of Baïlero in 1923 thus inaugurating the first of the five Chants d'Auvergne series that would bring him fame. Renowned baritone François Le Roux chose to begin his anthology with a famous shepherd song recorded near Vic-sur-Cère(in the Haute Auvergne) in which the baïles (shepherds in pasture commons) call to each other from hilltops soaring their vocals across rivers valleys and hills. The composer Patrick Burgan and the giant of French music Henri Dutilleux formed real elective affinities with each other. Dutilleux never missed an oppor­tunity to mention the high esteem in which he held the younger musician's work. Dedicated to the memory of Henri Dutilleux Songe à La Douceur takes its title from the 2nd verse of 'L'Invitation au Voyage' from the 'Fleurs du mal' by Baudelaire - a poet who was a constant source of inspiration for Dutilleux. Burgan invites listeners to explore the musical universe of the French master: the numerous quotations of his work duly flagged in the score form a superb constellation that stretches from the Mystère de l'Instant to the Deuxième Symphonie via the quartet Ainsi la nuit Métaboles and the concerto for cello Tout un monde lointain. Reflecting L'Invitation au Voyage the composer follows the principle of verse and refrain and the hypnotic return of the soft chords in pizzicato echoes the famous lines: Là tout n'est qu'ordre et beauté / Luxe calme et volupté. This tribute in the form of a delicate alchemy combines sparkle sweetness and spirit.

For more than forty years Allain Gaussin fascinated by astrophysics has found a major source of inspiration in observing the cosmos as attest a number of works going from Vent solaire (1974) to Philae (2015) by way of L'Harmonie des sphères (2006). Ten years later the 'Messiaen du Pays de la Meije' Festival hosted the first performance of the piano trio Les Céphéides. The musical journey enables the listener to enter a space 'just as impalpable and fragile' as that in which moves each Cepheid variable - this star whose brightness varies over regular periods according to two elements: the diameter of the heavenly body and thetemperature reading of its surface. How does one translate such a change in music? The bow's sautillé gettato on the violin and cello gives the score's opening pages this granular glittering that leads us 'towards the centre of the Cepheid variables'. From there a stream of colourful arabesques - the composer's 'ribbon figures' - gushes forth. After a weightless transition the cello unfurls its contemplative meditation which ends up in a suspended coda open onto the infinity of the starry vault. As musicologist Michèle Tosi accurately says so it is that the full richness 'of a teeming imaginary universe' unfolds.

Born in 1944 Francis Coiteux has led a successful career as a music professor and composer. Chant Des Clarines for Clarinet and Piano is a sublime addition to the repertoire. Rustic by Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) is one of the most well-known and enjoyable pieces for Trumpet and Piano published in 1955. Technically and musically challenging you must be able to master vibrato and control your instrument. The Piano score was initially written for a brass quintet. Eugène Bozza won different prizes at the Conservatoire de Paris such as the First Prizes for the Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He composed several operas chamber works and ballets among others.

French composer Charles Chaynes (b. 1925) studied at the Paris Conservatoire and won the Prix de Rome in 1951. In addition to several operas and chamber works Chaynes also composed several successful concertos such as his Trumpet Concerto. Suitable to the repertoire of advanced trumpeters Chaynes ' Trumpet Concerto is adaptable to both the B flat and C Trumpet. The Concerto contains many challenging yet appealing features such as use of varying time signatures articulation extended techniques complex rhythms tempo changes and a wide range among other aspects.
