Henderson is a city in Clark County Nevada just southeast of Las Vegas and surrounded by desert: this was the inspiration for the title. Desert Dances opens with a lively introduction mostly in 3/4 which pervades the faster sections of the piece. This subsides to introduce a slower dance which expands to a full-band climax. The introduction soon returns and leads to the main theme of the piece a waltz-like melody played by the full ensemble. A short bridge passage follows which leads to a legato central theme. This is played twice and heralds the return of the main theme and a short coda which closes the work. An imaginative work for concert or contest withnice features throughout all groups of the band. Written for the 100th Anniversary Celebration of-John Williams has written ceremonial music for many major events and ceremonies but of all these occasional pieces Summon the Heroes is the most elaborate and musically complex. It was composed for the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996 and performed at the opening ceremony. As with all of John Williams’s ceremonial compositions this work makes an ideal brass band work that will bring the house down as a concert opener.

Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe where itinerant Jewish troubadours known as ‘klezmorim’ had performed at celebrations particularly weddings since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century lyrics had been added to klezmer music due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings) to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrastingtraditional tunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.

Fanfare and Celebration was commissioned by the Brass Band of the Western Reserve (Dr Keith M. Wilkinson director) to celebrate their 15th anniversary. Based in north-west Ohio the band was formed in 1997 and was competing in the Championship Section of the North American Brass Band Championships in less than three years. The first performance of Fanfare and Celebration took place in Akron Ohio on November 10th 2012.The opening Fanfare features the cornet section in two groups standing either side of the band. A central horn theme brings a change of mood before the cornets take the lead once more. Celebration follows seamlessly andcontinues the declamatory style until a cantando theme in uneven meter is introduced. A transformed recapitulation ushers in a return of the Fanfare to close the work. Fanfare and Celebration was commissioned by the Brass Band of the Western Reserve (Dr Keith M. for Cornet and Brass Band-In this solo work - a commission for an 18th birthday present - the opening mood of a brooding modal blues gives way momentarily to a more optimistic central section. Following an emotional climax and reflective cadenza the opening material returns but now tying in with the central section and the piece fi nally ends in a more positive mood.

August lebe lebe König from Cantata 207a-A Festive Tribute is an arrangement of a splendid chorus whichBach first used in the secular Cantata 207 of 1726 but is perhapsbetter known in its later version which appears in Cantata 207a thedescriptively titled Auf schmetternde Töne der muntern Trompeten which cannot be adequately translated but means something alongthe lines of ‘let the trumpets sound’. While the lyrics are perhaps alittle obsequious much of the music for this cantata is celebratoryand lushly scored for a large orchestra including trumpets oboesd’amore and flutes making it an ideal piece for a concert bandarrangement.

for Bassoon (or Baritone Saxophone) and Concert Band- Wind in the Reeds was commissioned by Deena Draycott in memory of John Watson an army bandsman teacher and bassoonist. Wind in the Reeds is both a tribute and lasting memorial to John. The piece is largely pastoral in nature evoking images conjured up by the ‘play on words’ in the title but includes a faster central section which exploits other aspects of the character of the bassoon. Transitions between the various sections of the piece are achieved through a series of accompanied cadenzas for the soloist.
