Blazon est une œuvre de commande pour l’Orchestre d’Harmonie de Niederbrechen en Allemagne. Elle fut offerte comme cadeau d’adieu à Michael Steiner le directeur musical qui quittait la formation en 2009 après onze années passées à sa tête. Sous son impulsion les musiciens ont accompli d’immenses progrès. Lui dédier une pièce en guise de remerciement s’imposait comme une évidence. La création de l’œuvre a eu lieu le 17 mai 2009. L’orchestre était dirigé pour la dernière fois par son chef. Blazon permet d’exploiter le talent des cuivres et des percussions. La pièce s’ouvre avec une grande fanfare pleine d’énergie qui chemine à travers les pupitresdes trompettes des cors et des cuivres graves. Un changement de tonalité fait apparaître un thème en legato joué d’abord par les bois puis repris par l’orchestre en entier. La fanfare initiale revient soulignée par des motifs ornementés dans les bois pour mener l’œuvre vers sa fin brillante.

Variations on a Scale was commissioned by CMV Excelsior Schraard in the Netherlands to celebrate their 90th anniversary. The piece is in the form of six variations of different lengths but without a unifying theme. Instead each variation includes either a melody based on the notes of a scale or figurations based upon scales in the accompaniment.

A Tale as Yet Untold was commissioned by the Cory Band for the European Brass Band Championships in Linz Austria 2010 and their winning performance gave them a hattrick of victories at the competition. The theme of this impressive work which is set in three movements is one that recurs again and again throughout the music of Philip Sparke the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity and how the beauty of music can help in this respect.

after a poem by Friedrich Schiller-The piece is based on Friedrich Schiller’s epic 1798 poem Das Lied von der Glocke (The Song of the Bell) which is one of the most famous in all German literature. The poem draws a close parallel between human life and the process of casting a bell. It has three movements: Life Celebration Sound the Alarm and Journey’s End.

Fanfare for Tokyo was commissioned by the Tokyo Wind Symphony Orchestra to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2013. It was premiered at their special anniversary concert in October that year conducted by Maestro Yasuhiko Shiozawa. Fanfare for Tokyo is a flamboyant and extrovert concert opener designed to celebrate the virtuosic character of the talented Tokyo Wind Symphony Orchestra. A central theme over persistent percussion is first given by bassoons and taken up by the full ensemble. Either side of this horns and euphoniums lead an acrobatic fanfare under woodwind flourishes.

The tune Old Hundredth is one of the best-known melodies in all Christian musical traditions and first appeared in the 1551 psalter Pseaumes Octante Trois de David where it is used as a setting for a version of Psalm 134; it is usually attributed to the French composer Louis Bourgeois (c.1510 - c.1560). The melody was then used in 1561 by the Scots clergyman William Kethe in Sternhold and Hopkins’ Psalter for his paraphrase of Psalm 100 - All People that on Earth do Dwell which is still the most familiar hymn sung to this noble tune. When Tate and Brady’s New Version of the Psalms was published in 1696 the melody became know as the ‘old’ version - henceits current title. This arrangement presents three contrasting verses and is effective as a concert piece as well as an instrumental interlude as part of a church service or wedding.

A Bicentennial Tribute to Adolphe Sax- Variations – Paris 1846 was composed specifically for the 25th anniversary of ‘Brass-Aux-Saxes’ in 2014 coincidentally the 150th anniversary of Adolphe Sax the inventor of the saxophone. As a result Philip Sparke created this work to pay homage to Adolphe Sax. The work is a series of variations based on one original theme and gives the ‘fanfare orchestra’ a unique and rare setting you would usually only find in Belgium the Netherlands and parts of Japan. Consequently this shows all of the different aspects of the band through both colour and technique.

Just based on its title this piece has to be celebratory and up-beat which it is! It opens with a stately fanfare first played on the low brass before the entire band joins in. This gives way to a contrasting lyrical theme which develops until it joins up with the fanfare to complete the opening section. A lively and heavily syncopated vivo follows cast as a traditional march complete with a ‘bass strain’ and trio. After the original march theme returns a climax leads back to a reprise of the majestic opening which brings the piece to an appropriately triumphant close.

The Mortimer Revel- Highdays and Holidays was commissioned by the South Berks Concert Band to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2016. The band rehearses in the village of Mortimer which has a long and fascinating history dating back to and beyond the BronzeAge. Mortimer is famous for The Mortimer Revel an annual event which was apparently a fairly rumbustious and sometimes violent affair. Highdays and Holidays seeks to capture some of this festive event in the form of an energeticoverture which explores a variety of moods including the somewhat chaotic atmosphere of the Revel.

Three Klezmer Miniatures is Philip Sparke’s third work based on traditional Jewish klezmer melodies after Shalom! and A Klezmer Karnival. Klezmer music originated in the ’shtetl‘ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe where itinerant Jewish troubadours known as ’klezmorim‘ had performed at celebrations particularly weddings since the early Middle Ages. In Three Klezmer Miniatures Philip Sparke used the traditional tunes Sham Harei Golan Nigun Shel Yossi Tumbalalaika and Hava Nagila.
