The special occasion that Philip Sparke was honoured to write this piece for was the 200th anniversary of the Stadtmusik Bad Säckingen. Since Bad Säckingen is known as the ’Trompeterstadt’ or trumpeter city Sparke’s creative process was influenced by Joseph Victor Scheffel’s poem Der Trompeter von Säckingen (The Trumpeter from Säckingen) which is based on a true story. The overture starts with a majestic fanfare followed by a lively molto vivace. It is joined by a brilliant trumpet call in honour of the city’s famous resident.

Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and now a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead’s special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career.The village ofMörschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title Diamond Concerto . Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:1 EARTH STARis rather stern in mood opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.2 OCEAN DREAMuses a varied quote from the composer’s Music for Battle Creek including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas written at Steven Mead’s suggestion in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.Soloist: Difficulty 6 Diamond Concerto is available for euphonium and piano (AMP 374-401) as well as for euphonium and brass band (AMP 354-030).

for Oboe and Concert Band-Composer Philip Sparke decided to use the idea of white to write a piece that was both bright and light in terms of harmony colour and orchestration. He achieves this by using simple major and minor chords and emphasising the pure transparent timbres of the upper woodwinds of the band. He was also keen to capture the essence and history of the oboe as a solo instrument. A perfect way to put your oboist in the spotlight.

A Fantasy on the Hymn Tune 'Helmsley'- With Clouds Descending is a fantasy on the powerful Advent hymn Helmsley which is long associated with another Advent hymn - Wesley’s Lo! He Comes with Clouds Descending . The hymn tune is divided into an introduction and three complete verses of Helmsley which surround a slower central section whose melody is derived from the last line of the hymn tune. Philip Sparke’s grade 4 arrangement of this majestic piece for Brass Band is equally suitable as a concert opener or a main concert piece.

from the Paramount Pictures THE GODFATHER-Francis Ford Coppola‘s 1972 film The Godfather is seen by many to be a turning point in cinematic history. The sparse score written by Nino Rota is famous for its haunting main theme played by a solo trumpet from which The Godfather Waltz is derived. Philip Sparke has created a stunning arrangement of this theme which appears in all three parts of the trilogy.

Erbarme Dich mein Gott from St Matthew Passion- Have Mercy Lord from J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion is one of the most beautiful arias from the baroque period. In Philip Sparke’s arrangement it is envisaged that the soloists stand together as a group stage right while the other musicians stand behind to form the tutti group. This piece is easily playable for both the soloists and the band and will create a beautiful moment of reflection whether performed on the concert stage or in a church.

Spirit of Endeavour is a virtuosic piece of music with a positive musical message. It tells the story of a wind band embracing hard work friendship musical excellence love marriage and birth as well as the sad loss of cherished members.Composer Philip Sparke decided to salute the history of the Canadian concert band ‘Harmonie de Charlesbourg’ with a work that falls into two contrasted sections. One Vision deals with forming the band and the subsequent united desire tocreate an ensemble espousing the idea of musical perfection. The Pursuit of Excellence salutes the 20 years of hard work of the wind band. This concert work ends with a chorale of thefull band symbolising the fulfilment of a united dream!

Symphony No. 2-Composer Philip Sparke had been attracted by the charming city of Savannah ever since his first visit there. It was therefore a delight to be asked to write a piece to mark this significant anniversary and at the same time honour America’s first ‘planned’ city and its fascinating history.

Cette œuvre en deux grands mouvements dépeint un voyage imaginaire à bord d’un yacht le long de la côte Est des États-Unis. Tout commence par une description de l’aurore en haute mer ( Sunrise at Sea ) ; l’océan s’éveille doucement ( The Ocean Awakes ). La musique est aérienne ; la courbe mélodique des bois s’élève au-dessus des couleurs brillantes des cuivres. L’œuvre croît en intensité et culmine avec le lever du soleil. Dans la lumière du jour l’horizon lointain s’étale comme un tapis infini. La croisière s’annonce sous les meilleurs hospices. La mer est calme mais le calme est trompeur. Le bateau est bercé puis sérieusement chahuté par les vagues.Une fois la sérénité retrouvée le yacht poursuit son itinéraire. Le deuxième mouvement amorce le chemin du retour ( Homeward Bound ). Les conditions de navigation sont idéales. Le bateau fend délicatement les vagues chatoyantes. Mais la météo est changeante ; un vent frais souffle dans les voiles. Le yacht est à la merci du vent et des vagues. Une brève accalmie déchire le ciel mais le vent se relève et se fait de plus en plus fort. Les embruns glacent notre visage ( Spindrift ). Le bateau menace de chavirer. Nous réussissons à réorienter les voiles et profitons du grand vent pour effectuer un retour particulièrement grisant !

Marching Winds was commissioned as the set piece for the Youth Festival Singapore 2010 a competition for all the youth orchestras in Singapore. As the title indicates it is written in the form of a march. The opening fanfare leads directly to the modal main theme. It is contrasted by a second legato theme which builds to the climax of the piece. The main theme makes an appearance again before the piece comes to a finish.

Spirit of Andalusia was commissioned by The Glasgow Wind Band. The brief was to create a fascinating 5-minute opener however during the compositional process the piece started to take the form of a Spanish influenced composition. Thecomposer decided to stick to this involuntary development and started producing a tribute to Spanish music in particular Flamenco - which originates from the region of Andalusia.
