Score- String Quartet No. 3 was commissioned in 1971 by the Julliard School for the Julliard String Quartet. It subdivides the ensemble into two duos which play contrasting movements both individually and at the same time exploring feelings of rivalry and cooperation. Elliott Carter (1908-2012) was a highly regarded American composer who continued writing innovative music into his 11th decade. His early influences included Charles Ives Gustav Holst Aaron Copland and Nadia Boulanger with whom he studied in Paris in the 1930s. He was known for always adapting and changing with the times and became more and more popular as his stature grew throughthe decades.

Completed in 1950 each Etude is different and they move through various moods and this work is an example of the music he wrote in an attempt to find his own distinctive musical voice. This volume includes performance suggestions by Carter himself conveying that the Fantasy must not be played on its own but preceded by at least 3 Etudes. Study Score-In this work Babbit defines the row as a set of values and relationships absolutely and strictly defined not only in terms of structure but also of operational process he applies the serial technique in a strict dodecaphonic procedure: maintaining the fixed order of the twelve tones in the vertical (harmony) and the linear (melodic) succession.

The Tokyo String Quartet commissioned this string quartet composition in 2001. This one-movement piece about death and loss was written in memory of one of Tower's friends and later of those who died in the September 11th terrorist attacks. The second String Quartet by Joan Tower is a short but complex work addressing thoughts of death and loss written in memory of an old friend. The piece was commissioned by and is dedicated to the Tokyo String Quartet who firstperformed the piece in February 2002 at the 92nd Street Y New York City. Further inspired by the events in New York on September 11th 2001 the writing contains high sustained celestial material which slowly descends. Thiswriting is paired with more forceful driving and repetitive musical ideas that attempt to express the anger and pain that results from the loss of people in one's life.

Score and Parts-The composer's note: The Duo for Flute and Piano (1961) was composed in Berlin while I was a student at the Hochschule fur Musik . It was written for the flutist Neal Zaslaw who gave its first performance withJuliette Arnold at the Brooklyn Museum on August 20 1961. For many years the manuscript was lost. The revival of the piece from a copy whose origins are obscure was effected by Fenwick Smith and Randall Hodgkinson and thesecond life of the piece owes much to their advocacy.
