Wings was written in 1981 for the clarinettist Laura Flax who premiered the work at the Merkin Hall in New York the same year. It follows the flight of a large bird at times barely moving as it flies very high gliding along the thermal currents and at other moments looping around in elaborate flight patterns diving downwards and gaining tremendous speeds. Joan Tower (b. 1938) is a contemporary American composer pianist and conductor. She has become renowned for her bold and spirited compositions. The New Yorker has described her as “one of the most successful woman composers of all time” and she is still in demand forcommissions today.

John Harbison (b. 1938) is an American composer who has written for every type of concert genre including symphonies operas and large choral works and who is known for his lyrical and wide range. He cites his influences as Bach Stravinsky and Jazz but his Piano Concerto (1978) with its two free expressive movements could almost be described as Chopin-esque. Dedicated to Robert Millar it was commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra. As the Piano is no longer the dominant medium in the musical world it is the composer’s intent to provide a work that can start a new future for this incredible instrument. Originally scoredfor Solo Piano and Orchestra this arrangement has been transcribed for two Pianos.
