A simple and short but very beautiful setting of the well-known Christina Rossetti text by Cornish composer Becky McGlade. An atmosphere of cold winter stillness is conveyed in this piece with its gentle dissonances and slow homophonic movement and the music follows the natural rhythm of the words resulting in frequent changes of bar length. Each verse is set to the same music but in the final verse the music responds to the climax of the poem with the words ‘give my heart’ repeated three times rising in intensity but then falling away again to finish as the piece began in quiet stillness. A rewarding sing and an excellent alternative to otherfrequently-performed settings of the text.

Thinking about the unaccompanied vocal texture brought Will Todd back to his 1995 setting of the words of The Venerable Bede Christus Est Stella which in turn made him think of the beautiful words of Vidi Speciosam. The setting seeks to convey the ecstatic nature of the text set almost exclusively in a homophonic style. The harmonies are rich and opulent like the text which derives from the Song of Songs and describes the appearance of “my fair one” with vivid and beautiful romantic imagery and perfumed language. A striking addition to the choral repertoire Vidispeciosam is both a joy to sing and a delight for the listener. Christmas Carol- Lullay my liking was commissioned by BBC Music Magazine for the publication's December 2014 issue. The brief was to compose a carol with simplicity of form and this Middle English 15th century carol text lent itself to an expressive yet succinct setting. The score is influenced by the revival in Christmas carols at the beginning of the 20th century that led many writers to compose in a quasi-medieval style exemplified by G R Woodward's Ding Dong Merrily on High .
