A jolly Christmas carol- This lively carol was commissioned in 2005 by Lichfield Cathedral Special Choir (now called the Cathedral Chorus) to celebrate the birth of Hannah Scriven and Holly Mason the daughters of the two cathedral organists at that time. The words were specially written by Tony Barnard the then Canon Chancellor at Lichfield and a member of the choir. This carol whilst not entirely foreign to my normal style touches more country and western'/popular buttons than I am in the habit of touching. But I wanted to write a tuneful piece which swayed and danced and reflected the colourful imagery of Tony Barnard's text. Recommended recording: Comeout Lazar - The shorter choral works of Paul Spicer (Regent REGCD280) by The Chapel Choir of Selwyn College Cambridge and Claire Innes-Hopkins (organ) directed by Sarah MacDonald. Text: This child of God who's born on Christmas day whom shepherds view to whom kings homage pay is called to be a shepherd and a king. Sing alleluias praise this wondrous thing. This child of God is shepherd born to lead through pastures green by banks of golden reed; nor left nor right but ever on the way which leads to Calvary and endless day. This child of God this Son of David's line is root of tree a shoot a fruitful vine it shelter gives to all who see the way which leads them to the cross and Easter day. This child of God this many spangled star is light'ning flash which dazzles near and far; bright light to guide our feet along the way that leads to Calvary and endless day. This child of God is called to save mankind to open eye and ear the heart and mind; to heal and make the lame man leap and play along the road that leads to Easter Day. This child of God let angel voices praise. Give God the glory live his loving ways. Let peace on earth o'er come our worldly strife through all who walk his road throughout their life. Tony Barnard

Commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Guildford to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the consecration of the Cathedral The Holy Spirit sets a text by the poet and novelist Evelyn Underhill with masterful word-painting. Although there is some organ accompaniment most of the work is a cappella with varying moods and textures to reflect the highly descriptive text. Contrasting with the gentle opening and ending the work’s climax dramatically calls for the Holy Spirit to ‘show Thy power’ and the full organ chord and fanfare-like response from the choir will stun an audience or congregation. An exciting addition to a choirs service or concert repertoire.

Four Carols for Dark Times- The set of ‘Four Carols for Dark Times’ was written between 2003–5 and commissioned at the rate of one piece per year for the Birmingham Bach Choir to perform at their Christmas concerts. The third carol entitled Carol was inserted later to provide a ‘scherzo’ movement to provide balance to the set. The poems are all by that extraordinary Welsh priest-poet R S Thomas (1913–2000) whose poetry speaks to the composer “with a directness unmatched by any other 20th century poet”. Thomas’s writing is rich with the imagery of human frailty in relation to religion. The final poem Festival is as good an example as any of his approach: the trappings of Christmas –gold holly mistletoe – are used to contrast the cheapness of our self-centred celebration with the commitment required to nurture real faith. Beautifully constructed with intricate but accessible harmony and varied textures and moods this intriguing set of carols will bring an original and thought-provoking perspective to Christmas concerts and services.

Stravinsky had been a member of the Russian Orthodox Church since 1926. It may therefore seem peculiar that he would choose to write a concerted Latin mass. However the choice of the traditional Latin text of the Catholic Mass was a practical one: the Russian Orthodox Church prohibited the use of instruments in services and Stravinsky did not want to write an unaccompanied vocal work. For SATB Chorus and double Wind Quintet.
