Arranged for two pianos by Leonard Bernstein-From the time of Copland's first visit to Mexico City in 1932 when his friend Carlos Chávez took him to a nightclub called El Salón México Copland wanted to compose a piece about the unusual dance hall. He said I was attracted by the spirit of the place and by the Mexican people. Using Mexican melodies seemed appropriate. My purpose was not merely to quote literally but to heighten without in any way falsifying the natural simplicity of Mexican tunes. Much to Copland's surprise and delight El Salón México was welcomed warmly in Mexico and has consistently been one of his most performed pieces. He said Never in my wildest dreams did I expect the kind of acceptance for thepiece! 2 Pianos 4 Hands. Copland A

This new large-size paperback full score based on the original printed score of 1929 provides a clearer and more authentic edition for conductors and students. The original engraving has been graphically enhanced and edited with reference to the amended 1953 Edition Russe de Musique edition the original engraved orchestral parts and Ravel’s autograph manuscript. This smart edition also features newly published editorial notes in English French and German plus facsimile pages from Ravel's original manuscript containing markings made by the work’s commissioner Serge Koussevitsky. Published as part of B&H’s prestigious Masterworks Library full-size format (229 mm x 305 mm) this is the essential edition for conductors and students. In 1873 Mussorgsky was deeply affected by the death of his great friend Victor Hartmann a painter and architect. The following year an exhibition of Hartmann’s work inspired Mussorgsky to write Pictures at an Exhibition . It was unpublished until after his death in 1881 but ultimately became his most important Piano composition. It features ten pictures illustrated in three separate movements and connected by the Promenade a theme which leads us through the Gallery from one picture to another. This is a somewhat ponderous Russian style theme but the variations on this prove sparkling and compelling as they entwine with the melody of each part of the sequence or journeythrough the gallery. Maurice Ravel’s orchestration completed in 1922 is the most famous and by far the best known re-working Mussorgsky score the piece de resistance of a master orchestrator. This is the Full Orchestral score from the Boosey Masterworks Library and this new edition is based on the original printed score of 1929.
