Dramatic arias-These two settings of French texts for soprano and orchestra were Goldschmidt final compositions. The first Judith by Pierre le Moyne (1602-71) describes the Jewish woman who wreaks vengeance on her Assyrian captor Holofernes by creeping into his tent at night and cutting off his head with a sword. The second Rondel sets a poem by Tristan Corbiere (1845-75) a highly unconventional writer who spent his life in complete obscurity in Brittany and was posthumously discovered by Verlaine. Together these ‘dramatic arias’ form a moving and fitting close to Goldschmidt’s compositional career with an economy of expression line and gesture characteristic of his late style. Eacharia may be performed separately if desired. Study Score - Hawkes Pocket Score 1334. Goldschmidt B

One of the most hauntingly beautiful melodies in all of music this setting of Fauré's Pavane features an expressive piano accompaniment and positively luscious choral sounds for more capable two-part choirs Faure's Pavane embodies the clarity balance and serenity of the Renaissance dance form as well as the subtle colour and shading of French music at the end of the 19th century. Written in 1887 the piece was originally scored for Cello and Orchestra the piece was later adapted to include miming dancing and an invisible Choir in 1891. The Pavane subsequently formed part of the Ancient Dances display at the paris Opera in 1895 and was also choreographed and performed by the Ballet Russes . Arranged for 2 part Treble Choir and Piano accompaniment by Doreen Rao.

Infectious rhythms and playful melodies characterise this setting of an original Spanish text. Already a hit with mixed and 2-Part treble choirs this new voicing for men's voices is long overdue and will be a welcome addition to the men's choir repertoire.
