The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke-Scored for chorus children’s choir organ and chamber orchestra St Luke Passion adopts a pared-back focus on choral voices over its 75-minute span. Seeking a more spiritual inward approach to match Luke’s text the composer eschews settings of interpolated texts as arias and the customary Evangelist and Christ soli: everything is sung by choral forces. A children’s choir grants a measure of innocence to Christ as the sacrificial lamb emphasising aspects of otherness sanctity and mystery. The Passion narrative is framed by a Prelude exploring the Annunciation and a Postlude taking us beyond the Crucifixion to the Resurrection and Ascension. These incorporate Gospel textswhere Luke explains the Kingdom of God. Will Todd born in 1970 is forging a strong reputation for himself as a composer who is equally at ease in opera oratorio church music and jazz. His style is instantly accessible and lastingly memorable. He spent his formative years steeped in both jazz and the English choral tradition so in his choral music he is able to juxtapose strong rhythmic drive and rich harmonies with exquisitely lyrical vocal lines.'Lighting The Way' was written to be sung by choir and congregation (with piano or organ accompaniment) and is designed to becompletely flexible in terms of vocal forces. It can be performed successfully by any combination of voices whether school orchurch choirs consisting of upper or mixed voices.Mostly unison and later breaking into 2-parts this work is a tuneful celebration of God's blessings. The lilting melody combined with the fresh and contemporary harmonies give this anthem its special charm. Composer's note: 'In Double Bind? my desire is to offer on the one hand a glimpse of the inner life of sounds and on the other hand a fantasized manipulated and altered view of the relationship between musician and instrument as well as life 'in the wings' of a musician. As in my preceding work for live instruments and electronics I have taken an interest here in the playful jumble of the limits between the 'real' and the 'artificial'.” - Unsuk Chin Double Bind? for solo violin and electronics was premiered on 2 December 2007at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris by Hae-Sun Kang for whom the work was written. Thelive electronics were designed by Benoit Meudic at IRCAM.

The Mysteries of Light-Sub-titled 'The Mysteries of Light’ the composer states that this work attempts to revive the ancient practice of writing music based on the structure of the Rosary. The most famous example of this is the collection of the Rosary (or Mystery) Sonatas for violin by Heinrich Biber written in the late 17th century. MacMillan’s concerto is based on a set of five meditations introduced by John Paul II in 2002 the Luminous Mysteries. In spite of this rather than being devotional the work proceeds in quasi-dramatic fashion not too distant in concept from a tone poem. Commissioned by Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra on the occasion of the Orchestra’s Centennial and firstperformed with soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet in April 2011. Performance materials available on hire. Introit for the feast of All Saints- 'Composed in 2009 this short celebratory introit was the first of several unaccompanied works I composed for Matthew Owens and the Wells Cathedral Girl Choristers. The text ('Let us all rejoice') exists in a number of versions and here honours 'all the saints at whose solemnly the angels rejoice'. The texture essentially imitative is governed by a syncopated melodic phrase which gives way to softer material in the middle section. The return of the opening idea drives the piece towards a broad jubilant conclusion. The work was arranged for SSATB in 2010 for the Exon Singes Festival the upper parts unaltered. 'John Phibbs
