The Celtic was written as David Heath's second work as composer in residence with the BT Scottish Ensemble. It is dedicated to the ensemble's musical director violinist Clio Gould who gave the premiere in 1995. The concerto is in three movements each with its own story. The first movement Ceilidh captures the atmosphere of a ceilidh getting wilder and wilder as everyone gets intoxicated on the 'atmosphere'. The second movement is a Lament for Collessie: during the autumn of 1994 Heath's family had to move back to London and they all really missed Collessie Fife where they had lived for a year. Lament for Collessie is a slow movementwhich expresses these feelings. In 1994 one of the great craftsmen of the century flute-maker Albert Cooper was 70 and Heath wanted to write a piece to celebrate his birthday. Living in Cupar Fife Heath decided to base the piece on an old version of a popular local song 'The Wee Cooper of Fife'. As Albert lives in Clapham (London) it became The Cooper of Clapham. The Celtic has been recorded by Clio Gould & the BT Scottish Ensemble on Linn CKD073 and by Ittai Shapira & the English Chamber Orchestra on Black Box BBM1083

A suite of 6 superb pieces by Gary Ryan who many consider to be the UK's finest classical guitarist. Ryan's lyrical and atmospheric style effortlessly draws on the inspiration of images of America's Wild West to provide an exceptionally attractive set of pieces which can be performed individually or as a suite lasting 25 minutes. Ryan recorded the suite on CD in 2003.

Twelve Astrological Preludes were written over a period of roughly two years and several were broadcast on BBC Radio 2's Friday Night is Music Night as well as in other concerts. Aquarius was written in 1994 as a filler to a popular BBC solo piano series of the time called At the Piano. It was named Aquarius for programming purposes and as Elms left the studio the producer called after him 'Only eleven to go' – and so Twelve Astrological Preludes came into being. The preludes which run in the usual cycle are based upon two melodic strands and there is one piece in each of the twelve major keys. The character and style of each prelude alludes to certaincharacter traits of its particular birth sign and each piece bears the initials of a friend born under that particular sign. Each prelude is prefaced by a printed description of some of the general characteristics deemed to be associated with that sign. These are of course generalisations! Some preludes show a little deference to some of my favourite 'masters'. Elms has recorded Twelve Astrological Preludes for the Herald label and they are available on the CD Moody Moves together with other pieces of his chamber music including the piano sextet from which the CD takes its name. More information is available at masterkeyboards.co.uk.

Moroccan Fantasy was originally two pieces I wrote in the 1980s Shiraz and Gentle Dreams. Then in 1999 'star pupil' saxophonist Simon Haram wanted a new piece so I wrote Moroccan Fantasy based on the earlier pieces extending the harmonies of Gentle Dreams and giving Shiraz more of a Reggae feel. Young Scottish saxophonist Rowan Hawitt then heard Simon's recording and wanted me to make piano and sax reduction so here is Moroccan Fantasy in various arrangements for solo wind instrument and piano. All the pedal dynamic and tempo markings are suggestions only. All my music can be played in many different ways-the main thing is to make it your own and express yourself. Oboe and Piano- ' The Sapphire ' is dedicated to Heath's daughter Naima Sapphire. On the day she was born in 2000 Heath was walking over the meadows in Edinburgh to see her and could hear bagpipes playing in the distance. That inspired him to write this piece. The melody and over-all style are influenced by Scottish traditional music however the harmonies come from modern jazz.

Gottlieb And Rhapsody Of The Spheres are two works for solo Organ. Gottlieb was first performed in 2000 by Simon Neiminski at St Mary's Cathedral Edinburgh. Rhythmically there is a strong influence of Rave music and harmonically I turned the blues upside down often using minor triads in the left hand with major triads in the right hand. Gottlieb is dedicated to Sydney Gottlieb. 'Rhapsody of the Spheres: Reading something John Coltrane said on his album 'A Love Supreme' that 'all vibrations lead to God' got me thinking maybe music is the best form of describing what is going on at an atomic and subatomic level: that the great composersand musicians take you to Heaven rather than try to describe it in words. With that in mind I wrote this piece-a prayer to the Moon and the Stars-where I wanted by using the most majestic instrument of all the organ to describe the beauty of existence. This is a one movement piece – slow-fast-slow – and is dedicated to my eldest son Sean.' David Heath
