This work which was written shortly after the Trumpet Sonata and the Five Pieces For Piano was first performed by Georgina Dobree and the composer at the 1957 Darmstadt Festival. The score was subsequently lost but wasrediscovered by Kevin Corner in 1983. 'This is a dramatic emphatic and at times extravagant piece. The first movement is a Moderato reaching through wide-flung clarinet lines and keen piano gestures to a great climax near theend. Then comes a quick movement a kind of demonic scherzo including a cadenza for the clarinettist. The finale is an Adagio that gradually achieves a sort of simplicity though not before exceedingly testing times for bothplayers. Duration c. 25mins.

Night Dance was written between September 1986 and January 1987 to a commission from David Starobin who gave the first performance on 5 April 1987 at the Wigmore Hall London. It is a miniature tone-poem depicting ascene of an old man sitting in a doorway at dusk. He is playing a guitar and begins by plucking the lowest string as though searching for what he wishes to play. As the music gains momentum it gradually moves upwards by meansof the guitar’s open strings and breaks into a dance. Now it is dark and a nightmarish band of dancers passes by the old guitarist. The dance jerky and uneven develops melodically and harmonically the initial material of thepiece. After a climax the dancers move on - the dance music subsides and a nocturne is heard interrupted periodically by the music of the dance in the distance. Maybe this is not geographical distance but the distance oftime perhaps the whole episode has been mere memories. The piece ends musingly with the motive from which it began.

Acquainted with Night' is a cycle of six songs for alto and strings harp and timpani. The texts are all concerned with different aspects of night. The first song ‘Lullaby’ to a poem by Beaumont and Fletcher seeks to evokethe ‘care-charming’ powers of sleep. The second a setting of Robert Frost’s ‘Acquainted with the night’ is concerned with the lonely world of a strange city at night and the music is characterised by an insistently repeatedfigure in the accompaniment. The third song contrasts the calmness of the night with the turbulence in a lover’s mind - the poem is by the Earl of Surrey. ‘Out in the dark’ a poem by Edward Thomas is the text of the fourthsong. It is in the form of a scherzo and deals with the mystery and strangeness of night and as the poet puts it the ‘might’ of night. It is as the poet says a hymn to night and the chordal nature of the accompanimentsuggests this quality. This song leads directly into the last which is in fact a reprise of the opening ‘Lullaby’ so completing the cycle.
