Psychologists agree that dreaming is essential to our mental well-being. Artists have always been intuitively aware of this and the above lines are one illustration of this awareness. Composers as well as painters and writers have frequently drawn upon the fantastical imagery of dreams and The World Again is an attempt to convey some of the power of this imagery in music. The work is cast in the shape of a rondo with a coda which is really asummation of the piece. The ritornelli sections depict a dreamless sleep and the episodes represent dreams. The ritornelli are based on a simple motif which is heard in either C major or minor and never strays far from thosekeys. The World Again was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic and first performed by them on 9 October 1984 at the Royal Festival Hall with Jane Manning (soprano) and conducted by Andrew Litton. In 1986 ChristopherBruce choreographed the work for the London Festival Ballet who gave the first performance on 18 July 1986 at the London Coliseum with the Orchestra of the London Festival Ballet with Sarah Leonard (soprano) and conducted byGraham Bond.

Elias: I first came across Irina Ratushinskaya’s poetry when the collection ‘No I’m Not Afraid’ was published in England in early May 1986. The poems the various circumstances in which they were written and the poet’s integrity commitment and appalling situation (she was still imprisoned) all had a tremendous impact upon me. I was drawn inexorably into the world she describes so vividly. The powerful imagery of resistance the acceptance of shatteringrealities and the fantasies of different kinds of escape made poetry of truly universal significance and urgency and the idea of a setting for voice and large orchestra followed immediately. Each of the settings (in Russian) isself-contained and quite different in mood and orchestration. However I consider the songs as one piece and the whole cycle is performed without a break. All the basic musical material themes and motifs for the entire work arestated in the first few pages and the order of the poems was chosen to provide an overall musical and dramatic shape that attempts to link them together and to reflect more than the immediate meaning of the individual poems.

'Five Sketches' was commissioned by Nicholas Logie and first performed by him on 31 May 1984 at the Wigmore Hall. Quoting Maconchy: I have always had a particular affection for the viola with its darktone-colour and its unlimited expressive range. I have tried in these pieces to explore that range and to make them well varied in rhythm and content. The note E which the work begins and endsserves as a sort of point d'appui all through.'

This piece written for the violin can also be played on the flute. Written for Nigel Kennedy this piece can also be played on the flute. After starting my musical career as a classical flautist I soon became frustrated withthe repertoire and decided to write my own music based on experiences in modern jazz and Indian music. Encouraged by the enthusiasm of several young musicians - notably John Harle and Nigel Kennedy - about my first piece 'Out ofCool' I wrote 'Rumania' in 1979. Dave Heath

This short opera (duration of 50 minutes) aptly designed for children to perform with modest resources is a version of the familiar tale though with certain adaptations. Musically the piece is a bright sequence of littlesongs choruses dialogue scenes and dances probably best suited to children between the ages of eight and twelve though the parts of the ugly sisters can usefully be taken by boys with broken voices. The music is scored foran orchestra of recorders trumpet percussion strings and keyboard and ranges through a variety of styles. The opera has eleven solo parts and a chorus who act as a train ball guests and the magic kittens. It is alsosuitable for performance by children aged eight and upwards.

Six of Ahmatova's poems set to music (for soprano and cello) by John Tavener. In these settings Tavener has tried to reflect the deceptive simplicity of the verse which stems from classical tradition. In the final song Deaththe musical material of the earlier songs is gathered together. Then the poet bids a painful farewell to her beloved homeland and steps into the ‘cabin’ that has been particularly prepared for her. The Akhmatova Songs werecommissioned by the Cricklade Music Festival and first performed on 28 September 1993 by Patricia Rozario and Steven Isserlis at St Sampsons Church Cricklade.
