This chamber cantata for high voice and six instruments was composed (along with works by Harold Gramatges Eduardo Angulo and Alvarez y Rivalera) for theanniversary of the birth of José Martí (1853-1895) the great Cuban poet and revolutionary. The text was only relatively recently discovered almost a century after it was written by Cintio Vitier andPina García Marruz members of the Cuban literary group Origene.

Commissioned by Marty F. Myers for John Scott and the choir of St Thomas' Church New York. First performance on 23rd December 2006 at the 4pm Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols given by the choir of St Thomas' Church conductedby John Scott.

Composed in 1997 and revised in 2000 the piece is part of 'The Tempest Songbook' and was dedicated as a birthday present for Paavo Heininen. The first part of Gorecki's remarkable cycle Genesis is a gritty and unforgiving exploration of pure sound and sonority. The strings are treated to a huge variety of effects and techniques including tremolandi glissandi bridge bowing and de-tuning. This approach creates an ever changing and fluctuating timbral journey that has more in common with the Fluxus school Gerard Grisey or even Edgard Varese than with the seminal Symphony of SorrowfulSongs . Einstein On The Beach the opera from which Knee Play 2 was extracted was a seminal work that broke all the rules being non-linear non-narrative episodic dreamlike and five hours long. Knee Play 2 is one of the number songs composed for scene changes simply set to Organ and using numbers and solfege syllables as text. American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of themost celebrated influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referred to as a minimalist though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music with repetitive structures.' Glass ' operas among them the renowned Einstein On The Beach are performed across the globe and he has created work for small and large ensembles film and experimental theatre and founded his own performing group The Philip Glass Ensemble. This four minute piece is the second Knee Play from Einstein On The Beach and is scored for Violin.

For this centenary publication Professor Peter Dickinson who knew Berkeley and his work for many years has brought together for the first time the complete solo piano output including hitherto unpublished pieces. He hasexmained sources and corrected previously published versions as well as completing the set of 'Three Dances' which the composer left only partly arranged for piano from his unknown ballet score of 1932.
