Davies's feeling for the potency and bravura of the clarinet goes back to works of the 1960s; his concerto for the instrument is predictably a big ranging piece in two linked movements. The first fast with a brief slowintroduction has the soloist in propulsive melodic flights slipping over into florid runs but it is a virtuoso piece for the orchestra especially for the marimba and pair of horns. The Adagio that follows is in the spare cold birdcall-riven style of other recent Davies slow movements exploiting first the clarinet's low register and then at its climax the instrument's high extremes. A cadenza leads to the coda where Davies introduces a Scots tune previously hinted at with which he brings the work to an end in F sharp major. Miniature score.

Op. 33 for Brass Quintet. Commissioned by the Three Choirs Festival 1992 and premiered by the London Gabrieli Brass Consort. This is a short piece for brass quintet in one movement. The polyphony of the introduction gives wayto massed chords which in turn lead to the first main section. This is a funeral march during which all the instruments have solos in turn. The trombone is first then trumpet I; horn; later in duet with trumpet II; finallythere is long solo for the tuba. The second section is a series of fanfares on trumpets joined by the horn which alternate with successive phrases of a chorale melody on the lower instruments - horn trombone and tuba. MitFried and Freud ich far dahin is Martin Luther’s masterly and very beautiful re-creation in German of the Nunc dimittus. The massed chords of the introduction then return and the piece ends with the polyphony with which itbegan. Parts available: SOS04782

String Quartet No.3 was written for and first performed by the Balanescu Quartet February 1990 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall London. Duration 16 minutes. Instrumental parts are available on sale. Quoting composer: In thesummer of 1989 I composed a choral work Out of the Ruins for Agnieszka Piotrowska’s BBC2 documentary which dealt with the physical and emotional responses of some inhabitants of Leninakhan to the earthquake whichdevastated Armenia the previous December. When he heard the recording of the work that I made with the Holy Echmiadzin Chorus under the fervent conducting of Khoren Meykhanejian Alex Balanescu suggested turning Out of the Ruinsinto a string quartet. There seemed no reason or opportunity to do this until I felt the need to add to the intensity of my experiences in Armenia the no less profound experience of witnessing the images of the Romanianrevolution on television during the later part of December 1989. The compositional procedure was as follows: to take Out of the Ruins as a template on which the Romanian vocal or instrumental music would be superimposed quite often stretched into new intervallic shapes though the demands of the completely performed harmonic structure.

These variations are based on the concept of Beethoven's 32 variations in C Minor. In Beethoven's work all the variations are eight bars long without any changes in tempi or time signature. Each variation is complete in itself but the variations are carefully grouped and juxtaposed to have a cummalitive effect. His individual variations are always very clearly connected with the original theme both melodically and harmonically. Rather than occupyinghimself solely with decoration of the original melody Beethoven's concern was with piano figuration and technique. In following the principles Beethoven created in this work Elias has attempted to concern himself with the samepreoccupations; by using clealy audible motifs that permit him to concentrate on writing for the instrument and by using short sharply defined phrases (always of eight bars) to build up a larger structure.

Unusually for him Davies starts his Bassoon Concerto not with slow music but with speed and brilliance: the opening is a Presto initiated by the strings and only at the entry of the soloist does the tempo relax to thatof a real introduction. Out of this grow a big dancing Allegro. The slow movement begins and ends with a simple song around fantastical ornamentation from the soloist. The finale is again a recitative and dance with a slow coda. The whole work is an immense show of stamina poetry and athleticism for the bassoon set against an orchestra coloured by low wind (alto flute clarinet in A bass clarinet contrabassoon horns). Bassoon part with pianoreduction of the orchestral score.
