Each piece has been easily arranged for String Quartet by Watson Forbes and is designed to givedeveloping string players the chance to rehearse and perform in ensemble as early as possible. Each work is well known and relatively straightforward enabling the musicians to obtain a sense of achievement and get maximumenjoyment from their playing. Watson Forbes (1909-1997) was a British Viola player arranger and broadcaster. He studied both Violin and Viola at the Royal Academy of Music before specialising on the Viola withSevcik. He played with many string ensembles during his career before becoming Head of Music for BBC Scotland in 1964. His is best remembered for his extensive series of educational arrangements of classical music for variousstring instruments both solo and in ensemble.

Love-Promise is the third movement of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak ’s cycle‘Five Choruses For Male Voice’. The cycle of five choruses is set to Lithuanianfolk texts translated by Frantisek Ladislav Celakovsky and is written for unaccompanied male choir (TTBB Voices). The title page of the autograph score bears the note: “Composed on the journey from Prague to Vienna 12th ofDecember 1878”. The individual parts of the cycle present a vibrant palette of moods from the balladic ‘Dwellers by the Sea’ to the final light-hearted ‘The Sparrow’s Feast’. The songs’ melodies echo thespirit of folk songs and the composer used simple but colourful harmonies and chose a strophic form.

Bernhard Lewkovitch (b. 1927) is a Danish composer born in Copenhagen to Ukrainian parents. Brought up in the Catholic Church he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music but the vast majority of his choral workshave been intended for liturgical use making him somewhat of an outsider to the contemporary Danish classical music world. Twelve Motets from the Spanish Golden Age were collected edited and published in 1971 towards the end of the decade that was the only period Lewkovitch spent working outside the church. They are a testament to his commitment to rediscover and popularise historical compositions from the continentalrenaissance era even while he was experimenting with modern techniques in his own compositions.

This short opera (duration of 50 minutes) aptly designed for children to perform with modest resources is a version of the familiar tale though with certain adaptations. Cinderella is an au pair girl who arrives on the scene bytrain and there are three ugly sisters who get their just deserts in marriage to the appalling leaders of the armed forces. Writing for children in the Orkney Islands Davies has also included some local references: these can bechanged to suit other times and places. Musically the piece is a bright sequence of little songs choruses dialogue scenes and dances probably best suited to children between the ages of eight and twelve though the parts of theugly sisters can usefully be taken by boys with broken voices.
