Short Version- For Violin Cello and Piano. Composer's Notes 'Even though this work was intended to celebrate (as instructed by the commissioner Brolly Arts of Salt LakeCity) the wildlife and landscape of Utah (and especially its birdlife notably the sora which has a noticeable influence on the melodic writing at times) the title refers ironically in this 'natural' context to the re-seeing’of (mainly industrial) reality in early Soviet photography. Aleksandr Rodchenko (1881-1956) drew attention to the new type of photographer as someone who photographs 'facts' and who is able through photography to fight against'looking like art' with high quality examples and to do this you have to experiment going as far as the ‘easelisation’ of the photographic art. The work was written for and first performed by the Ahn Trio in November2004 in Salt Lake City and is dedicated to the memory of John Peel the British radio disc jockey who died during the final stages of its composition.' - Michael Nyman

Like many composers who found themselves in exile during the war years Castelnuovo-Tedesco composed in a very neoclassical and neoromantic style reviving more traditional or antiquated ideas of melody tonality and texture. Hiscollection of Shakespeare Songs feature settings of verse from across the full range of the Bard's plays and have proved to be great critical successes still widely performed today. Suitable to be adapted by most voices.the songs are interwoven with complex and thrilling Piano accompaniments that bring colour and energy to the often liberally edited texts. A suite composed in 1920 in three movements: 1) Presto 2) Andante 3) Vif. In January 1920 the critic Henri Collet named Poulenc and five composing friends Le Groupe des Six' by analogy with the RussianFive. It was a convenient label for publicity purposes and Jean Cocteau as their self-appointed spokesman was quick to capitalise on the possibilities. But each of the Six always insisted that the group was just a collection offriends with no communal musical aims. As it happened Poulenc's Suite For Pianio and Impromptus for piano fit Cocteau's prescription quite well - they are clear light-hearted and entertaining. But thePromenades written in 1921 for Artur Rubinstein belong to the more serious side of Poulenc which was already struggling to make itself heard. This ten-movement celebration of different modes of transport explores a number of thenew musical techniques which were intriguing composers of the 1920s and the resulting language must have seemed difficult to pianists of the time although now it merely appears of its period.
