Composer's Notes : The last few years I have become increasingly involved in some peculiar mathematical formulas called 'fractals'. These formulas used in the fast growing field of 'Chaos theory' are relatively simple but they generate fascinating and surprisingly 'organic' patterns when shown graphically on a computer screen or played as music. One should think that such a mathematical approach would lead to sterile and 'theoretical'music. The sound world of Stonewave however is not one you would associate with math books. The steady insistent pulse and the use of sequences put squarely up against each other or divided by long rests suggest aninvisible ritual. A ritual for what? Well then let it be a ritual for the exorcism of some 'evil spirits' which now ride our part of the world under the name of Liberalism making people the servants of the Market Forcesinstead of vice versa. Stonewave is therefore an incantation as it seems that only divine forces can save European culture from a political system that proclaims the Jungle Law as the guiding principle in social andcultural life. Work for Flute Piano and String Trio. Quoting Karen Tanaka: The title Invisible Curve suggests flexibly curved space-time in four dimensions. The curve occurs because of weight and energy of the space-time. Myintention was to create a beautiful projection of an image of the invisible curve into the soundspace.

Composer's notes : The Fool is a time-honoured Orthodox religious figure: a Saint the highest of all who discards everything for Christ's sake. He discards all convention all decency all wealth actual and spiritual and turns himself into a figure of fun - defying all acceptable behaviour - and all religious decency. He stands in the square and lets down his trousers - he stuffs himself with food on Good Friday - he gets drunk - he 'appears'to fornicate wildly. There is a faint possibility (in not the highest of 'Fools') of gaining worldly popularity by such flagrant denial of all moral behaviour. Can such behaviour be too interesting? The true fool however embraces all of this and also (unseen) shrinks before the face of his God. By his behaviour he plucks out all hypocrisy false piety and corruption. He is a figure much needed in our times!!! The way I have tried to tacklethis extraordinary subject is to show him in seven stages from an obscene huge fat traditional clown who is drunk fornicating etc. through a stumbling frail agonized figure to a sallow-faced gaunt business man in a formalsuit staring at an empty glass. Having first revered him then mocked him the 'people' while they get drunk and jabber away at 'Christmas' and at the Feast of Feasts 'Easter' are no longer aware of him. But the audience seeshim - a tiny ragged scrap of mortality lying in a corner and faintly so faintly the voice of the Fool the true Fool for Christ's sake sings above the ribald crowd. 'He has given His life'. The Gogmagogs are the 'people' 'priests' 'singers' etc. and one male singer who can 'create' or 'uncreate' this vast role (singing and acting miming etc.) John Tavener Arranged for SSATBB chorus. Date of composition 2000. Chorus part only.

This 1992 work by the Finnish spectral composer Kaija Saariaho is an intense and complex piece for solo Cello and electronics. The music is derived from preliminary recordings made by the composer with Cellist Anssi Karttunen with an electronic part constructed from these recordings at IRCAM. The finished electronic realisation relies in part on real-time processing with Max/MSP along with several external processors and triggers the details of whichare provided within the score. Much of the notation for the Cello part has been specially devised to express the effects and unorthodox playing techniques required by the piece and a full guide to the less familiar symbols isalso provided. This Cello part is also available separately through item code CH61239-01.

Mishima String Quartet (String Quartet No.3) originally appeared as parts of the film score for Mishima by film maker Paul Schrader. The film follows a complex narrative structure which divides the life of thisfamous contemporary Janpaeses novelist into 3 parts - his childhood his mature years and the last day of his life. These subjects were intercut to produce a shifting kaleidoscopic vision of Mishima's life. The scenes of hischildhood were filmed in black and white and scored for String Quartet. An excellent contemporary string quartet by the innovative Philip Glass.

String Quartet No.3 was written for and first performed by the Balanescu Quartet February 1990 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall London. Duration 16 minutes. A score is available on sale.. Quoting composer: In the summer of 1989 Icomposed a choral work Out of the Ruins for Agnieszka Piotrowska’s BBC2 documentary which dealt with the physical and emotional responses of some inhabitants of Leninakhan to the earthquake which devastated Armenia theprevious December. When he heard the recording of the work that I made with the Holy Echmiadzin Chorus under the fervent conducting of Khoren Meykhanejian Alex Balanescu suggested turning Out of the Ruins into a string quartet. There seemed no reason or opportunity to do this until I felt the need to add to the intensity of my experiences in Armenia the no less profound experience of witnessing the images of the Romanian revolution on television duringthe later part of December 1989. The compositional procedure was as follows: to take Out of the Ruins as a template on which the Romanian vocal or instrumental music would be superimposed quite often stretched into newintervallic shapes though the demands of the completely performed harmonic structure.
