This exceptionally unique work by Joseph Turrin is composed in memory of Howard Hanson one of the 20th century’s greatest proponents of American music. While decidedly modern in sound the mood of this piece adheres to Hanson’s own belief in the value of “warm blooded music” rather than the pursuit of coldly abstract purely cerebral music. Hanson’s influence on 20th century music and the post-Romantic style is clearly evident in SERENADE ROMANTIC.If you’ve ever wished for something genuinely different for your higher level group to explore you owe it to yourself to check out this remarkable piece.

Fiddle tunes have been an important part of American music since her earliest days. You’ll enjoy James Curnow’s new suite based on two fiddle tunes from the Revolutionary War period. The first movement uses the flowing melody Lovely Nancy which is about a beautiful two-masted sailing ship. The second movement comes from a knee-slapping fast paced dance tune called Hay Makers. This will be a wonderful contrast piece to use for that lighter moment in your concert. It’s always fun to explore band music that is a bit out of the ordinary! This one is great fun from beginning to end and carries a marvelous historic connection as well!

Two melodies in the Scottish style meet head-on in this energetic new arrangement. Your students will love the “bagpipe sound” and rhythmic color of the Scottish “snap”. This arrangement can also be used with young bands as a lesson in the concept of counterpoint. Each of the two main themes is clearly stated on its own but remarkable things happen when they are played together. Through skillful selection of themes and contrapuntal composition Mike Hannickel does a masterful job of melding these contrasting songs into a unified and energetic adventure into the Highlands.Fun to play and a great style study!

This three movement work modeled on his earlier work Rhapsody for Brass develops from and mirrors the earlier work but with more modern tonal outlines and original melodic material. The first movement opens with several fanfare-like figures which recur at various times in different instrumental combinations. With development this music takes on a carnival-like atmosphere before concluding with an upward flourish. The second movement commences quietly with a slower theme shared by several solo instruments and develops into an extended study on The Water is Wide a folk song which seems to have its beginnings in the United Kingdom as O Waley Waley . Thethird movement reverts to the rhapsodic format with a lively theme marked ‘in a playful manner’. This substantial work is a gem in the concert band repertoire.
