Canadian Folk Song - A St. Malo Beau Port de Mer-This fascinating work tells of the French explorer Jacque Cartier who in 1534 set off on a historic voyage to explore the northern Canada. It makes use of the Canadian Folk Song A St. Malo Beau Port de Mer a song that is still a great favourite in Quebec today.

Let your brass band play the blues. This inivotive work makes use of traditional blues harmonies over a strong rock beat. The cornets carry the melody first but this is soon taken over by a solo percussion break. The piece also makes use of mixed time signiatures where the whole band plays the blues scale in an uneaven seven beats!

Throughout the years composers have found inspiration for their works in simple folk melodies. Tchaikovsky loved Russian folk music all his life. Whilst composing his 2nd symphony he was inspired by farmers’ songs that fascinated him during a stay in Kamenka (near Kiev). He composed this symphony in 1872/73 and used the melody from the song The Stork as the main theme for the Finale. James Curnow’s transcription of this 19th century masterpiece allows you to bring your contest or concert performance to a fitting Finale.

En 1738 Haendel compose l’opéra-comique Serse qui relate les diverses escapades amoureuses de Xerxès - représentation purement imaginaire du roi de Perse. Il intègre dans cette œuvre l’aria Ombra mai fú reprise dans diverses versions instrumentales sous le titre de Largo d’Haendel.
