It is quite probable that the dinosaurs have been exterminated by an asteroid's impact in the Gulf of Mexico. Huge tidal waves and fire storms wiped out all life. This is the year 2067 according to the Christian calendar. A collision has just taken place in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and caused an asteroid to enter the earth's power of gravitation. It is instoppably approaching the blue planet. As its peoples have been fighting each other continuously they missed the building of a global defence system against dangers coming from space. A scanner records the asteroid andimmediately sends a message to the President of the Anglo-American Union. The probability that the asteroid will hit the earth is judged 50% by the experts. Plans are made to shoot the celestial body with rockets live with hydrogen bombs or laser guns in order to throw it off its track but they fail. The asteroid's size seems to threaten the existence of mankind. Those in the know stare at the night sky in bewilderment. But for the time being there is still peace on earth....

Variazioni in Blue is a series of variations in which elements from the Blues such as the specific ‘blue notes’ run throughout the piece. Following a stately introduction which includes part of the theme is an ornamental variation in ‘classical style’. We then hear a variation in ‘Blues style” followed by a fast variation with an Eastern European folklore feel. The ‘Andante con espressivo’ is particularly fine with its attractive harmonic changes. This variation develops into a repeat of the previous folklore variations with its ‘major’ variation forming a climax towards the end.

From Coppelia Ballet-French composer Léo Delibes (1836-1891) was primarily known for his operettas and short comic operas. He was also famous for the ballet Coppelia from which arranger Wil van der Beek has transcribed the czardas for concert band. Characteristic of this work and the music of Delibes' in general are rhythmic alternating melodies. Another trademark of Delibes' work is the skilful choice of instrumentation a facet which this transcription honors thoroughly.The piece is a succession of the various themes the composer uses to work towards a brilliant climax.

The characteristic so typical of Jewish folk music is clearly apparent in this arrangement of the Jewish folk song Shalom Alechem. It is typical in the sense in that in spite of the minor key songs are often cheerful by nature Johan Nijs managed to capture this perfectly in this outstanding arrangement.

This work brought Mascagni overnight fame after his wife - without him knowing - entered the score in a composition contest and it won first prize. Cavalleria rusticana became an incredible success overshadowing the premiere of his next opera L’Amico Fritz. L’Amico Fritz can still be considered a successful opera with its highlights being the ‘Cherry Duet’ and this intermezzo arranged by the Japanese Kimura.

Metalla was commissioned by the 'Kreisverband Altenkirchen' of Germany and dedicated to Ottomar Jung. The composer himself conducted the premiere of the piece which was performed by the 'Jugendorchester Kreisverband Altenkirchen' on 25 March 1999.The region of Altenkirchen is known for its iron mines which find musical expression in the dark mood of the introduction (andante misterioso). This effect is accomplished with overlapping seventh intervals orchestral crescendos a succession of broad chords and the presentation of most themes in the middle register of the band.The dynamic section (allegro energico) that follows the introduction is characterized by concise figures inthe brass and a second motif a kind of rippling motion depicting the Sieg River an important element in the landscape of the Altenkirchen region.The work closes with a final theme that returns a number of times albeit in different guises. After a brief repeat of the seventh intervals from the beginning a last radiant chord signals the end of the piece.
