The melody of the chorale Nun danket alle Gott (Now Thank We All Our God) was originally written in 1636 by the German clergyman and musician Martin Rinckart . Its international fame is due to the fact that in 1725 Johann Sebastian Bach based his cantata Gott der Herr ist Sonn’ und Schild (BWV 79) on this melody. The five-part arrangement by Roland Kernen that lies before you is suitable for a variable brass line-up. After a short introduction the chorale follows first in four-part harmony and later with an added counterpart. A middle section which sounds refreshing and rhythmic because of the time changes and articulation used finally leads to a repeat of thechorale with an agile upper part. This arrangement also contains an organ part ad libitum.

The Albinoni Adagio is based on a manuscript that was discovered among the ruins in the Dresden State Library after the Second World War by Remo Giazotto a Milanese musicologist who was working on Albinoni?s biography at the time. Only the bass line and six bars of melody were there ? they probably belonged to the slow movement of a Trio Sonata. Around 1945 Giazotto reconstructed the now-famous Adagio that has made Albinoni known to a wider public. Ironically enough Albinoni himself would probably hardly recognize the piece.Part 1 Fl Ob Bb Clar S Sax Tpt Part 2 Fl Bb Clar Eb Clar A Sax Tpt Hrn Part 3 Eb Clar T Sax Bsn Hrn Trom Euph Part 4 T Sax Bsn Trom Euph Tuba Part 5 Bass Clar Bari Sax Bsn Euph Tuba Cont Bsn

There are thousands of such works for the violin but many of these cannot be tackled until you have been playing for a considerable time. Concertino in F major Opus 7 enables you to gain necessary experience for this type of playing; namely having sufficient musical and technical control over your instrument whilst having the support of an accompanist during performance. Festival Overture for Band-This “Grand Overture” was commissioned by the “Nagano Community Band” - Japan- on occasion of its jubilee in 1992 and is dedicated to the band’s conductor Ikuo Inagaki. The work is based upon three main themes each symbolising a certain theme. The first part is characterized by its bright themes played mainly by the brass accompanied by the woodwinds and festive percussion. This part symbolizes the jubilee which is the origin of the composition. This is followed by a bouncing allegro in which each register of the band displays brilliant techniques. Especially the woodwinds come to the fore! This movement depicts the industriousness and enthousiasm shown by the members of the“Nagano Community Band” in the carrying out of their hobby. A third main theme is choral-like in character and is displayed both in the (soft) brass as well as in the warm medium register of the reeds. Here nature’s beaty in and around the city of Nagano is musically celebrated. Following a “chamber-music episode” (featuring the flute oboe clarinet alto-saxophone and horn) the initial allegro re-occurs weaving its way towards a grandiose finale in which the two previous themes are once again apparent. Due to its very colourful scoring and the enormous diversity of musical thoughts and ideas this composition is a fascinating and memorable piece worthy a jubilee overture!

St. Michael-The French composer Louis Bourgeois lived from c.1510 to 1560. Bourgeois was cantor in Geneva and commissioned by John Calvin he composed melodies for metrical (rhyming) versions of the psalms. After completing about a hundred one-part psalms he made some four-part arrangements which were denounced and even resulted in his imprisonment for a day. Later Bourgeois published a number of psalm collections and judging from his book Le droict chemin de musique he was also an excellent educator. The melodies Bourgeois composed are (contrary to Gregorian chants) particularly suitable for community singing. This applies to his hymn tune Saint Michael which is why this melody hasbeen used for various texts written for many occasions. John Blanken made this arrangement for a wedding ceremony: an occasion in which faith and trust play a large - if not the largest - role. Hence the title Hymn of Faith. The arrangement contains four verses of the hymn. After a majestic opening the hymn follows twice the second verse being embellished in the tenor register. After a short interlude verse three follows played by a quartet. The majestic opening is then repeated as a modulation into the fourth verse which concludes the work in a brilliant tutti.

In making this piano reduction the arranger has attempted to retain as much of the original version (for string orchestra and harpsichord) as possible to give the soloist a clear idea of what is going on in the orchestra. Therefore certain passages especially in the third movement Elegy are rather tricky and not always easily playable. The composer’s suggests omitting some of the notes in the chords if required or for example when a chord is repeated in succession to play the chord in full on the beat but to play only the outer notes of the chord after the beat. Where necessary spread chords can be played as marked.

Overture 'Der Zigeunerbaron'-The operetta The Gipsy Baron is together with Die Fledermaus (The Bat) the most famous theatre work by Johann Strauss Jr. A libretto full of romance original musical ideas compelling Viennese dances fiery rhythmic Hungarian music and beautiful arias were just some of the ingredients that lead to its huge success. The Gipsy Baron can also be thought of as a comic opera. The main motif of this overture won first prize in a contest that was to provide a new Hungarian anthem however because Strauss did not have Hungarian nationality another melody was chosen. A great transcription to bring a Hungarian twist to any programme.

Fulnaho-Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting and forests. In western art she is often pictured with deer lions or bears with a bow in her hand. The tempo of this march is stately and the themes are “concertante” in character making Artemis best suited as a concert march rather than a street march. Technically this march is not too difficult although at times some dexterous fingering is necessary. The trio melody is especially lyrical and offers various sections within the band the possibility to show off their skill in playing the expressive melody. This excellent new concert march is sure to become a classic and be performed time and time again.

This stately opening work begins in the low register with a broad main theme from the low brass immediately setting the tone. Gradually other sections and registers enter and despite retaining a majestic character the rhythmic element becomes more active. This work makes truly creative use of sound without great virtuosity or complexity but maintains a good balance between static and dynamic elements.
