On average about eight thousand (mostly light) earthquakes occur worldwide each day. Composer Jan de Haan has always been fascinated by this natural phenomenon. Earthquake portrays the beautiful South-American peninsula Isla Iberi which lies directly on a major fault line. The peace and tranquility is shattered by a major tremor and the terrified people flee in fear. In addition to showing the earthquakes destructive power Earthquake also conveys the courage and faith of the industrious people of Isla Iberia as they energetically start the reconstruction of their beloved residential area. Earthquake is dedicated to the memory of all victims of the devastating Asiantsunami which occurred on 26 December 2004.

Easter Fantasy- Fantasia di Pasqua is a fantasy in which traditional Easter melodies have been used. The work is written for brass band with a separate brass quartet which since this music is often performed in churches the composer suggests should be positioned on a gallery. This creates a double choir effect and perfectly fits the Renaissance-like style. Each of the melodies is played in various dance-like cadences that partly because of the double choir effect will result in a very lively and original performance.

Marching Blues was written in the blues and swing-jazz style of the great big bands. It is an ideal show march that can be used for encores popular performances family concerts and much more. The Blues is a well-known style of popular music. The name does not come out of thin air. After all the term ‘blues’ refers to a state of mind: with the sentence ‘I got the blues’ someone means they are in low spirits. The blues originate in the melancholic music that the slaves in the southern United States made to relieve their depressing circumstances to some extent. Missa Brevis written for choir and wind band was commissioned by the Conseil Départemental pour la Musique et la Culture de Haute-Alsace (Dir.: Philippe Pfisterer) in Guebwiller (France) in celebration of the millennium of Pope Leon IX’sbirth in Éguisheim (France). The composer conducted the first performance on June 23 2002. It was performed live for the French television channel France 2. The mass movements Kyrie Gloria Credo Sanctus Benedictus and Agnus Dei are very suitable for the Catholic as well as the Protestant liturgy. For this mass various ways for performing in diverse variable strengths are possible. An instrumental performance is possible if the brass represents the choir parts. In thisoption it is desirable for the brass to be positioned separately from the rest of the band (on a gallery for example) so that the idea of two choirs is approached. In a performance with a large choir the brass can work very well as a support. Inthat case the dynamics of the brass should be adapted somewhat since these are actually intended for an instrumental performance. You can also leave out the brass entirely for the benefit of the choir. For the accompaniment of smaller choirs youcan opt for a small ensemble from the band. This can also be a quartet put together as desired. For the performance of this mass the obvious choice is one of the above options. However as an alternative a performance with a combination of theseoptions (vocally/instrumentally) is also possible – not just from an artistic point of view (variation) but also from a practical starting point – for example in the case that the choir has rehearsed only two movements. With a full strength theconductor can vary the instrumentation to his or her liking. Then the brass can also play a role in the accompaniment (instead of supporting the choir). The following combinations are possible: 1. clarinet choir (from Eb Clarinet to BassClarinet) 2. clarinet choir + saxophones 3. brass (flugelhorns horns euphoniums bass section) 4. brass (2 trumpets / 2 trombones) 5. double reeds (optional + flute optional + string bass) 6. tutti 7. all winds 8. allbrass In a performance by brass band and choir it is usually advisable to leave out option 1 (choir + brass + band). The choir sings self-reliantly accompanied by a full brass band. In an instrumental performance you can consider a combinedquartet (two cornets and two trombones) + brass band. Johann Sebastian Bach composed a large quantity of music of unparalleled greatness and his works are still much performed today. This Prelude is deceptive. It is built on very few ideas and has none of the catchy melodies often found in his music. It does however have a sublime haunting beauty which grows as the piece unfolds.

Balkan Dreams was inspired by Kees Schoonenbeek’s love of the gypsy music originating from Hungary and Romania. Although this is not authentic gypsy music it echoes the compelling and melancholic music heard by the composer full of dreams and promises. This piece will add a little exotic touch to your concert.

Originally written for 3 vocal soloists choir and orchestra Cantata No.79 is partially based on the well known hymn Now Thank We All Our God the melody of which is attributed to Martin Rinckart. This arrangement for concert band by Robert van Beringen combines part of the first movement (Coro) with and ensemble from the third movement (Choral).

Ottoman Dances is a work that consists of two dances in a Southeast-European style. One is from Bosnia-Herzegovina and the other is from Turkey. Both of these countries were part of the Ottoman Empire (1350-1918).The first movement is a relatively calm dance with dynamic contrasts and different manners of articulation. The second movement is a fast dance in common time with a lively atmosphere. Bring a bit of eastern delight into your concert with this easy new piece.

from the opera Rinaldo van Georg Friedrich Händel-Let Me Weep (‘Lascia ch’io pianga’) is an aria from Handel’s opera ‘Rinaldo’. According to reports he composed the music for the complete opera in just 14 days using many melodies from earlier works. The melody of this wonderful aria is known all over the world and this arrangement by Jacob de Haan retains all the passion of the original.

Fantasy on Lobe den Herren (Praise to the Lord the Almighty)-The melody Praise to the Lord the Almighty (heard in Bach’s cantata BWV 137) has its origin in 17th century Germany and is included in the hymnbook Freylinghausen’s Geistreiches Gesangbuch. This hymnbook originates from the beginning of the 18th century and is considered one of the most significant collections of Lutheran chorales published in Bach’s time.This beautiful new work for concert band is based on the internationally known and loved chorale and will make an ideal serene interlude in any concert.
