The Gavotte is an old dance that is used by most of the baroque composers such as Bach and Handel. This gavotte composed by Handel has been expertly arranged for young band by Andrew Watkin.

This piece is dedicated to all the citizens who live have lived and will live in the US town of Algona who commissioned the work to celebrate it’s 150th anniversary. With dark-tinted tones (low drums heavy brass) this overture begins with a primitive sacred feel it seems as if centuries-old Indian singing is heard once more. Gradually the sound becomes clearer and brighter as the same theme travels throughout the band in various guises and variants. Imposing tutti passages then give the band the chance to lavishly shine. This bright and catchy overture radiates spontaneous energy and as it features every section of the band all the players as well as the listenersare continually surprised and captivated.

For many years Peter Kleine Schaars’ jazz quartet provided sparkle and energy for various festivities and other occasions. If required the ensemble could alternate jazz repertoire with pop and latin music too. Their wide experience taught the musicians that an hour of unbeatable repertoire is the perfect end to every swinging party. Based on this practical knowledge Kleine Schaars has chosen his favourite pop pieces and arranged them in this animated medley entitled That’s the Way (I like Them).

All I Ask of You is one of the main songs from his award winning musical Phantom of the Opera.

La disposition particulière des blocs permet d’observer le lever du soleil ou le coucher de la lune de prédire lessolstices d’été et d’hiver de déterminer les positions de la lune à travers les diagonales etc. En résumé ce mystérieux monument de pierre permet d’observer les changements de saison. Stonehenge est une mise en musique d’images et d’impressions atmosphériques ; un paysage sonore dont la trame ne suit aucun scénario précis mais dont les images sont réelles.

In 1880 Edvard Grieg composed twelve song poems by Aasmund Olavsson Vinje. He arranged two of these songs for String Orchestra published under the title of Two Elegiac Melodies Op. 34. These two deeply meloncholy pieces were titled The Wounded Heart and Last Spring. The latter of these two titles inspired Tohru Takahashi to produce this expressive and sensitive transcription for Concert Band which will make a fantastic encore piece for any concert.

Little Suite for Flexible Band-This short “cool” suite in three movements can be performed with a variety of instruments from a handful of players to a complete concert band. The first movement radiates joy with a powerful 3/4 beat. The second movement is in the style of a pavane which gives a sense of nostalgia and the final movement forms a cheerful and high-spirited closing with a really funky beat. This wonderful suite has been composed especially for youth musicians and they will all gain great pleasure from performing it.Because of the four-part instrumentation School's Cool is suitable for smaller strengths taking into account that it is important to divide parts evenly among the players. Alsoincludes an ad-lib keyboard/piano part to support the ensemble.

Remembrance Day (Totengedenken) is a chorale-like piece in memory of those who have died in service. Jacob de Haan composed this work for a concert by the symphonic wind orchestra Symphonic Winds which he conducted in Germany on Volkstrauertag (national remembrance day). The composition is based on a text from Totengedenken (Commemoration of Those Who Have Died). This narrative text is provided in four languages and is intended to be spoken (using a microphone) ad libitum during the performance. Choir parts are also available to complement the performance.

Dorogoj Dlinnojn-The origin of the song Piet Swerts arranged for concert band in Russian Gipsy Song probably lies with Russian gypsies who know it under the title Dorogoj Dlinnojn and who ardently consider it their mental property.The melody of this Russian folk song is better known under the title Those Were the Days My Friend the song that singer Mary Hopkins made famous in 1968. Within a year after she had issued this song well over five million records of it had been sold. There are also versions in French (Les temps des fleurs) Spaans (Qué tiempo tan feliz) Italian (Quelli erano giorni) and German (An jenem Tag) of this song full of nostalgia about the “good old days.”

Singapore Rhapsody is an exciting work in two movements based on popular Malaysian folksongs. The songs that occur in the first movement are Rasa Sayang eh (a love song) Gelang Sipaku Gelang (a song about community spirit) Suriram (a song about a girl proclaiming her virtues) and Di-Tanjung Katong (a love song that takes place at the Cape Katong on the southeast coast of Singapore). The second movement features Lenggang Kangkung which literally means “The swaying of the watercress ” Katang Lompat (a moralistic song about the symbolism of the frog) and finally Kenek kenek-lah Udang (a wedding song). Each movement of this enchanting work can be performed separately but acomplete performance will be the crowning moment of any concert.

Composer Modest Moussorgsky (1839-1881) came from the prosperous environment of Russian nobility. In 1865 after his officer’s education he joined the guard’s regiment in St. Petersburg. Here he met a number of well-known colleague-composers including Balakirev Cui Rimsky- Korsakov and Borodin. They strived to develop a “classical style” of composing while at the same time retaining a strong Russian influence. His opera Boris Godunov tells the tale of Boris who with the support of the people declared himself Tsar but totally fell short of the role. The opera became popular in the re-orchestrated version produced by Rimsky-Korsakov in 1896. Tohru Takahashi has usedthe beautiful musical themes of this opera in Selections from Boris Godunov - a captivating work for concert band.

Lied vom Waldmägdelein-Franz Lehár was born in Komárom Hungary on 30th April 1870. From the age of fifteen he received composition and violin lessons at the Prague conservatory from Antonín Dvorák. In 1905 he composed The Merry Widow which became an instant worldwide success. The libretto of this operetta provides a succession of intimate arias and duets with festive ensembles. The Vilja-Lied is one of these arias. In this edition for concert band all the poignant beauty of the original remains.
