This stately opening work begins in the low register with a broad main theme from the low brass immediately setting the tone. Gradually other sections and registers enter and despite retaining a majestic character the rhythmic element becomes more active. This work makes truly creative use of sound without great virtuosity or complexity but maintains a good balance between static and dynamic elements.

Little Suite for Flexible Band-This short “cool” suite in three movements can be performed with a variety of instruments from a handful of players to a complete concert band. The first movement radiates joy with a powerful 3/4 beat. The second movement is in the style of a pavane which gives a sense of nostalgia and the final movement forms a cheerful and high-spirited closing with a really funky beat. This wonderful suite has been composed especially for youth musicians and they will all gain great pleasure from performing it.

Farewell Song has been taken from Der Trompetervon Säckingen by Victor E. Nessler (1841-1890). Thisopera tells the sentimental story of a plain musicianwho is eventually allowed to marry the daughter ofa baron. From the first performance in 1884 thisopera was well liked - not so much because of thestory but because of its musical features. Impressivetrumpet solos drinking songs and dance scenes werethe ingredients that enthralled audiences throughoutEurope. Today only the farewell song called JungWerner’s Abschied also known as Behüt’ dich Gott has remained an absolute winner. Wil van der Beekhas written a fine arrangement of this entitledFarewell Song. He felt itwas appropriate to entrustthe melody of this song originally written for tenorvoice to the baritone or euphonium.

As the title suggests Spanish Overture has a strong Spanish character. The music in this overture is full of quintessential Spanish colours. Following a fluid and spontaneous development which moves between major and minor keys a slow passage with a calm and peaceful melodic line is presented. The finale of this passionate work recalls the initial theme now presented in all its splendour.

Purcell a composé ce thème brillant pour la musique de scène de la pièce Abdelazer ou la revanche du Maure (1693) d’Aphra Behn. Presque trois siècles plus tard Benjamin Britten l’introduisit dans son œuvre symphonique The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra (désignée souvent par son sous-titre Variation & Fugue sur un Thème de Purcell ) une partition pour un film documentaire sorte de visite guidée des instruments de l’orchestre. for trombones and band-Halloween is celebrated in many countries around the world on October 31. Traditionally children go door-to-door dressed up in costumes and collect sweets and treats. A hollowed out pumpkin with a face carved into it called a jack-o-lantern is a traditional symbol of Halloween. Some jack-o-lanterns have scary faces while others have fun whimsical faces. The trombones in this piece represent the jack-o-lanterns with their whimsical faces—hence the title The Funny Pumpkins. Your trombone section will have immense fun with this new solo feature.

for Alto Saxophone and Concert Band-Dance of Uzume is a concertino that is based on a Japanese myth: out of anger toward her brother Susanowa the storm god the sun goddess Amaterasu hides in a cave. The goddess of joy Uzume succeeds in luring the sun goddess out of the cave by dancing wildly. The joy and laughter of the other gods as they watch Uzume arouses Amaterasu’s curiosity and with her appearance the light on earth returns. This fantastic new original work will make a much needed addition to the advanced repertoire for saxophone and concert band. A version for saxophone and piano is also available.

Using themes based on semi-quavers Peter Kleine Schaars has carefully crafted these four contrasting dances for the De Haske Flexible 4 Series . Each of the parts take a turn to play the melody so no player feels left out. Take your players on a musical dance lesson in which you’ll hear a paso doble a slow waltz a tango and a swinging jive. Fantastic fun for the smaller ensemble.

Three Moods for Bass Clarinet and Symphonic Band-At last the bass clarinet can shine in this major new solo work for bass clarinet and concert band. This composition begins with a rather mysterious opening passage with atmospheric sounds and effects. The soloist plays - preferably backstage - a number of fragments and melodic patterns without actually “starting” the piece. After this somewhat hesitant introduction a lively cheerful allegro entitled Con Giocondita (with joy) bursts out. It is swarming with irregular meters changing tempos and polyrhythm through which the listeners (and sometimes also the musicians) constantly get the feeling that they are being tossed around. The second movement brings rest andpeace making careful use of sound colours. The upbeat finale titled Con Allegria (with cheerfulness) is the most significant movement for the soloist. This is a challenging piece of music that demands great virtuosity but with the correct performer it will be a real highpoint in any concert..

This is a book with cool pieces for those who haven’t been playing very long but still intend to steal the show! The terrific musical accompaniments on the CD will really add to the enjoyment and there is room to make up your own solos in some of the pieces.

In 1880 Edvard Grieg composed twelve song poems by Aasmund Olavsson Vinje. He arranged two of these songs for String Orchestra published under the title of Two Elegiac Melodies Op. 34. These two deeply meloncholy pieces were titled The Wounded Heart and Last Spring. The latter of these two titles inspired Tohru Takahashi to produce this expressive and sensitive transcription for Concert Band which will make a fantastic encore piece for any concert.

It was written for the opening ceremony of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf (Allgäu Germany) and can be played in four different versions depending on your needs or the players available. You can use a complete version a short fanfare played just by cornets trombones and timpani a double fanfare (extended with tutti-band) or a fanfare version followed by the hymn. Fanfare and Hymn is an extremely practical and versatile ceremonial opening piece.

This delightful new composition takes its inspiration from the classic French swash buckling tale of Cyrano de Bergerac and his fight to win the love of the beautiful maiden Roxane. The subject was a perfect departure point for composing a symphonic poem with a variety of musical aspects reflecting the story. Lyricism (the theme of Roxane) dramatic episodes as well as Debussy-inspired impressionist moments are some of the elements that give the band and its conductor the chance to expose themselves as a versatile ensemble being able to create colour to sing and to play like virtuosi. This work is sure to become a standard item in the concert band repertoire.
