Border Zone (Zone frontalière) est une œuvre en trois tableaux musicaux qui racontent l’histoire de Dinxperlo un village situé à l’est des Pays-Bas dans la région de l’Achterhoek non loin de la frontière allemande.Le premier tableau s’ouvre avec une description de la Course des Bataves une course de relais inter-universitaire entre l’Université de Nimègue et celle de Twente. Après un passage sur le sol allemand les participants reviennent aux Pays-Bas en traversant la frontière à Dinxperlo. Ce thème est joué en alternance avec un thème énergique et audacieux qui dépeint les contrebandiers longtemps très actifs des deux côtés de la frontière. Le second tableauillustre la grande procession qui a lieu chaque année à Dinxperlo. Le troisième et dernier tableau s’ouvre sur les sons joyeux qui montent du traditionnel marché de Pentecôte qui s’étend de l’autre côté de la frontière. Les sons animés du marché sont entrecoupés d’un tissu sonore écrit dans l’esthétique d’un choral et qui fait référence à la plus petite église des Pays-Bas un site culturel très prisé. Les deux thèmes cheminent vers un finale brillant et passionnant.

Au courant de son périple il retrouve Pamina dont il tombe éperdument amoureux. Mozart a composé l’ouverture de son dernier opéra deux jours avant la première. Elle débute avec un adagio suivi d’un allegro écrit sous la forme d’une fugue. Le passage central développe successivement trois groupes d’accords qui rappellent les premières mesures de l’ouverture.

Concert March-This piece was composed in the summer of 2000 on commission of the Whightull Wind Ensemble. Seaside Road is a march in two-four time. The work begins with a tempestuous sound followed by a light passage. Featuring amongst others your Bass Clarinet and Euphonium soloists in the trio section the work builds towards an agile tutti before concluding with a powerful closing section. With the sound of trumpets and a long drum roll Dirk Brossé takes you to the splendour of the opening ceremony of a bullfight! The rhythm and the use of South American percussion instruments convey a festive atmosphere whilst broad lines and bright colours describe the solemn nature of this event. The imaginary bull is received with great acclaim with the full band playing. Two contrasting themes represent the heroic matador and the condemned bull. The audience cheers as the bull collapses and strong final chords round off the triumph of the matador. The final quiet notes give a feeling of melancholy reflecting the sad end of this story.

In the 1950s he broke away from his bourgeois social background of his family and started an artist’s life in Paris where he initially wrote chansons and earned a living by performing in small cabarets and bars. Over the following years he achieved worldwide fame with his chansons which were alternately harsh and melancholic Roland Kernen has selected a number of the wonderful chansons written by this most creative artist to produce this unforgettable chanson medley.
