Schifferlied développe une ligne simple fluide et limpide à l’instar des mélodies viennoises. L’arrangement pour Orchestre d’Harmonie est fidèle à cette approche. In the course of the two centuries following the death of Henry Purcell in 1695 no British composer of any statue was apparent. Consequently the break-through of Edward Elgar (1857-1934) as an internationally known and respected composer at the end of the last century was of considerable importance. As a composer Elgar was largely self-taught and he looked towards the continent for his inspiration. He is without doubt on par with his contemporaries such as the somewhat younger Richard Strauss. The Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost is a genuine admirer of Elgar’s music and on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the composer’s death in 1984 he composed the “CeremonialMarch”. Van der Roost was inspired by the most famous and frequently played works from Elgar’s catalogue of works the characteristic “Pomp and Circumstances” marches and decided to add his own sixth march to the existing collection.

Een groep kinderen speelt aan de rand van het oerwoud. Allerlei vreemde dierengeluiden prikkelen hun nieuwsgierigheid en ze besluiten de geluiden te volgen. De paden slingeren door de dichte begroeiing en al snel is de terugweg niet meer te vinden. Angst en paniek slaan toe. De bosnimf Raneffa hoort de kinderen en ontfermt zich over hen. Zij laat hun de dieren zien die de vreemde geluiden maken. Ook vertelt ze over de bomen en de planten. De bedoeling van het werk is om kinderen in de leeftijd van negen t/m twaalf jaar kennis te laten maken met de fanfare als orkestvorm. Zoals in het bovenstaande verhaal worden ze ingewijd in de geheimen van het fanfareorkest.

L’inverse est plutôt rare mais Jacob de Haan parvient à nous démontrer le contraire avec La Storia . Sans jamais nous livrer des éléments de l'intrigue il nous propose environ sept minutes de musique intense. Par conséquent l’œuvre fait appel à l’imagination individuelle ; chacun d’entre nous étant libre de créer son propre scénario à partir de ce qu’il entend. Avec La Storia Jacob de Haan rend hommage au maître italien de la musique de film : Ennio Morricone.

Avec Vicinius de Moraes et João Gilberto Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994) est considéré comme le père de la bossa nova un style musical qui se caractérise par un souple balancement et qui évolue sur les rythmes de la samba brésilienne. As with many of Spielberg’s films the music has been supplied by John Williams and plays an extremely important role in creating the film’s atmosphere. The melody and orchestration makes this theme ideal for the sound of the brass band and this arrangement will not disapoint.

When composing this work the brief from the commissioning band was for the composer to base the work on a chorale-like subject matter and this he has done with aplomb. In the very first bars a chorale melody is presented and gradually the samethematic material is more extensively orchestrated with the melodic themes becoming more varied. With afew surprising harmonic turns the piece comes to a majestic end. This is a well-structured work of extreme elegance.
