Ostinati was written as a commission from Senzoku Gakuen one of the most renowned conservatories in Japan. Jan Van der Roost has imbued it with such a broad palette of ensemble colours that it puts the entire range of instruments of theorchestra in the spotlight. Dances & Sonnets is a piece by Jacob de Haan inspired by the dance and poetry of the 19th Century Europe. Lively instrumental dances alternate with spoken sonnets that are recited by one or more readers accompanied by quiet solemn music to provide contrast. Flight into a Hopeful Future-This opening piece by Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa expresses joy gratitude hope and courage. The three sections are performed without interruption. We hear ‘Joy’ in the brilliant introduction ‘Gratitude’ in the chorale-like middle section and ‘Courage and Hope’ in the closing section. He left behind several collections containing arrangements of Dutch songs and dance and also published several of his own works. Three of these published in 1551 were called Musyck Boexken or music book. Almost 500 years later Jan de Haan has used one of these melodies Mohrentanz for this theme with three variations.

This three-movement work is a tribute to French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. The first movement depicts what is without a doubt Bartholdi’s most famous sculpture the Statue of Liberty in New York which also gives this piece its name. The Resounding Passionate Heartbeat-This piece was commissioned by Japan Ground Self Defense Force Western Army Band. In the programme note for the première the composer wrote: “I am always impressed by the expansive earth and sparkling ocean scenery when I come to Kyushu. I have met many local people here and they are all expressive and energetic. I wrote this dramatic piece to convey to the whole of Japan the memory of my experience here swaying in the west wind. I wrote this hoping that the Self Defense Force will forge closer ties with the community through this piece.” Eastern drama felt in the west wind!
