Piano Solo-Lullabies / Vuggeviser for Piano solo was composed by Bent Sørensen in 2000. Preface / Programme Note: Some melodies keep haunting me: they will stick in my mind and I will walk about humming them and they will find their way into my music. Two such melodies are the basis for the present piano piece which I call LULLABIES. The first little tune began its life as a ballad in an operatic draft ofmine. Later on - with text by English poet Selima Hill - it became part of my songcycle ROSES ARE FALLING for mezzo soprano and piano. In the latter context it is a love song but I have always had a lullaby-feeling about this tune and indeed as a lullaby it appears in my opera UNDERTHE SKY to text by Peter Asmussen: inthe opera the loved one sings and hums to her beloved and make him come to rest. During LULLABIES the tune will appear a half tone lower with each entry and make its way downwards through the musical texture from upper voice to bassline. The other little melody is a true lullaby which I hummed for my youngest daughter to try and make her go to sleep. Later on it became the backdrop for the last movement of my trombone concerto BIRDS AND BELLS. The two melodies in their original form are reproduced at the beginning of LULLABIES. Den Fynske Spillemand af Bodil Heister. Bogen er en genfortaelling for born af Carl Nielsens erindringer 'Min fynske barndom' i en let forkortet udgave. Bogen fortaeller i sma episoder om Carl fra han som 6-arig far en lille violin at spille pa fordi han keder sig ved at ligge i sengen og til han som 18-arig kommer pa Musikkonservatoriet i Kobenhavn. Vi folger hans musikalske karriere fra hans forste optraeden som triangelspiller i faderens orkester til han bliver militaermusiker i Odense og begynder at spille trompet og basun. Bogen omhandler mange morsomme og spaendende episoder fra Carl Nielsens barndom i Norre-Lyndelse sammen med foraeldrene og de 11 soskende bl.a. hans venskab med Sophus hans forste job som gasedreng hans mode med traeskomageren hans skraek da grisen skulle slagtes og da han var ved at drukne i mergelgraven. Hvert af de 10 kapitler slutter med en dansk sang med musik af Carl Nielsen. Bogen er velegnet som hojtlaesningsbog.

The Disturbing Duckling- D'Monstrantz Voogeli (The Disturbing Duckling) by Per Norgard . Programme note: 'DMonstrantz Voogeli' is the main (and middle) movement of my three-movement choir suite 'The Alarming Duckling' the title of which is borrowed from a painting from 1959 by the Danish artist Asger Jorn apainting which - as this choral piece - is partly based on 'found objects': Asger Jorn painted on top of an idyllic old fashioned landscape painting with a house and trees - and he painted a very disturbing alarming duckling. It may be ugly the duckling but in any case it is most peculiar in its surroundings with spontaneous colorful wide painted feathers standing and looking dreamy beyond a birch in the golden light of the afternoon (a very big duckling indeed!) In 'DMonstrantz Voogeli' the dark nightly visions are unfolding with texts by the Swiss schizophrenic artist Adolf Wolfli (1864-1930). His transcending poems prose paintings and ideas inspired me for many compositions in the 1980s i.e. Symphony nr. 4 ('Indischer Roosen-Gaarten und Chinesischer Hexensee' - Hommage a Wolfli') The opera The Divine Circus and a series of choral works. The piece is written for 12 vocal soloists - singing whistling screaming and whispering. In 'DMonstrantz Voogeli' - for a choir of humans and birds - many 'found objects' are used: The tape/cd only contributes with unmanufactured birdsong - even though using full half and fourth speed so it is easier to understand and learn from the brilliant birds (especially the fantastic American Musician Wren

Snow White's Mirror is a full scale two act dramatic opera written for the Danish National Opera. The opera is a modern re-telling for grown-ups of the brothers Grimm's fairy tale: Snow White is a self-centered teenage narcissist and the villain of the opera; she ends up loosing everyone but herself either because she kills them or because they decide they can't stand being around her anymore. But apparently she's o.k. with that... The music is intended for a large audience: it's basically pop music done with all the craftmanship of a classical composer who'sequally at home with large scale symphonic form avantgarde technique opera singing - and modern pop.
