2008 Version- The Poet (2008 Version) for Violin Baritone Saxophone and Piano. Orig. version: WH30939 Programme note The Poet is the fourth of a series of seven compositions named after Karen Blixen's collection of short stories Seven Gothic Tales. My musical gothic tales are written for very different ensembles - THE SUPPER AT ELSINORE is a saxophone quartet THE OLD CHEVALIER is for bass trombone and piano THE MONKEY is a chamber orchestra work - but they all share musical material in a criss-cross of contextual references reminiscent of Blixen's narrativ ecomplexity: Themes and motivs from onepiece appear in others in new and surprising shapes and combinations. Karen Blixen's The Poet is about a retired counsilor who always desired to be an artist - once he even met his ideal Goethe - but knows that he is completely without talent. Instead he patronizes a young gifted writer to the extent of shaping himself into a father figure his protege depends upon. When a young italian widow arrives and the writer predictably falls in love with her and she with him the councilor arranges a marriage between the widow and himself in order to break the young poet's heart - only in the best intention: to make him into a real poet. But the writer decides to take his own life and the widow crushes the councilor's head with a heavy stone crying You poet! As he dies helpless to the will of destiny the councilor realizes that fate has wrought a story greater than any he could have invented. The Poet isn't 'about' anything. The music is inspired by the artistic content of Blixen's short story - it's emotionalism dramatic construction atmosphere period and setting - but unfolds in time and musical space in ways that are completely independent of the story's narrative progression... except one might say that the violin kills off thepiano while the baritone saxophone goes drown

Sonatine for Wind Quintet was composed by Anders Koppel in 2002. Dedicated to the Danish Wind Quintet. Programme note: My Sonatina for wind quintet was written in January 2002. The three movements of the work (Moderato Andante Sostenuto and Allegro con brio) are very much based in both structure and idiom on the classical tradition and gesture - the transformations in the first movement everything kept in place in a tight classical form. The wind quintet’s many commedia dell’arte masks are presented with humour and the work recalls works from musical history where composers have been inspired by spontaneous popular gaiety. Ophelias - Death By Water Singing (2006-2007) - Chamber Opera in 13 Scenes. Libretto by Cecilie Loveid. Commissioned by Opera Vest (Den Nye Opera) Bergen. Piano reduction available: WH31030 Parts are available on hire: hire@ewh.dk Programme Note: The Danish chronicler Saxo's Amled myth lies behind the famous Hamlet by Shakespeare the story about a hero avenging the murder of his father the king. Saxo depicts Amled as mad - but is Shakespeare's Hamlet mad or is he playing a role? To test Hamlet a 'date' is arranged with Ophelia. Hellstenius has chosen to viewthings from her perspective and the opera begins at the moment when she drowns herself in the stream. We look back at her experiences - falling in love with the unstable Prince Hamlet; her anticipation of becoming a queen; their rendezvous in the forest her ensuing pregnancy and his betrayal.

Triplis+ consists of seven songs based on computer-manipulated text fragments from Wilhelm Müller’s ’Die schöne Müllerin’. The seven songs should be played without interruption:I) Warum nicht?II)Nicht so...III)AngstIV) Wohin?V) HeimatVI) StilleVII)Ruhig. The score of TRIPLIS+ has a long history. The whole project began as a piece for piano and mezzo DUALIS (1987) to which I added percussion instruments to the vocal and piano parts which was deeply unsatisfying. (I also suggested certain ways of making different versions of the piece a so-called ’open score’ but this was even worse...) From the ruins of this piece I carved out a new DUALIS (1991) using the same material but with no percussion instruments added and in the form of a traditional ’frozen’ score. In 1993 I was asked to include a separate percussion part for a trio-version of my first undertakings of DUALIS. In close collaboration with the Cikada Trio I created a new version TRIPLIS (1993) which then in turn was taken as a point of departure for an extended version of the piece called TRIPLIS+ (1996-99). In this ’version integrale’ I - due to the requirements of the commission - added an ensemble of 8 instruments sometimes elaborating material from the mezzo-line sometimes contradicting or commenting upon it. The piano has a special role in both TRIPLIS+ and TRIPLIS: functioning as a kind of ’libro’ the piano textures which have the feel of an accompanying part are played ad lib throughout the work. In this way the pianist can change the actual dramatical flow of the piece. The first performance of TRIPLIS+ took place in the Bjergsted Music Centre in Stavanger Norway in April 1999 with the commissioner Stavanger Contemporary Music Ensemble under direction of the composer. The score is dedicated to B. Asbjorn Schaathun TRIPLIS+ (1996-98). For mezzo-soprano percussion electric organ alto flute coranglais clarinet violin viola cello double-bass and piano.
