The Slow Spring is a short and unusual choral setting of the writing of Tom Kristensen impatiently yearning for the coming of Spring. Kristensen's evocative and stirring poetry translated to English by Martin Allwood are employed as both song and accompaniment as the choral group is split into two factions. An set of SATB soloists are set against an SSAA chorus to provide a compelling variety of textures and the plosive possibilities of the words themselves are fully explored with whispers held vowels and dramatic percussive consonants. Piano-Programme Note: The name Event Horizon was coined by the brilliant British physicist Stephen Hawking to describe the circumference of a so-called black hole the remains of a collapsed star with a gravity-pull so powerful so that not even light can escape from it. This 5-minute study for piano has - needles to say - nothing to do with black holes but the term event horizon fascinates med and strikes me as near-perfect description of virtually any stretch of organized sound evolving in time e.g. a musical composition with a strong linear focus. So - Event Horizon it is as seamless composition of high density evolving in three parts: swinging-ricocheting-sweeping amusical journey of speed from fast to furiously fast a study based on a high economical compositional material constantly renewing itself the hands running parallel separating meeting again. The discreetest use of pedaling is advised ... Piano Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Orchestra (2009) by Poul Ruders. Piano Solo and Orchestral Reduction. Dedicated Becky Starobin. Written for Vassily Primakov. Commissioned by The Norwegian Radio Orchestra and Jerome Lowenthal. Programme Note In this day and age when faced with the challenge of writing a 'Piano Concerto' e.g. a piece for symphony orchestra and an all-dominating and virtuosic solo Piano part one has two options: either: DO or do NOT go for it wholesale exploiting and enjoying the conrnucopia of sonoroustreasures offered by the combination of the orchestra and the 'Grand Piano'. I have opted to go for it. When writing for one of our great young international Piano stars it would be absurd and a waste to do anything less and only 'nibble at the goodies'. However the piece is not a big clunky 'machine'. Rather it is a transparently orchestrated neo-classic (for the lack of a better work) composition in three movements lastign approximately 25 minutes. The piece begins with a moderately paced opening in which the Piano gradually gathers momentum and strength beginning with the most gentle of motifs. In this movement the soloist and orchestra fo not always agree and the vigilant listener will observe the disparity between the two. Following a swift up-beat coda the movement stops almost in mid-breath on one of the gentle Piano chords taken from the very opening. The extreme simplicity of the second movement 'Semplice' (the opening Piano solo bears the marking: 'slightly hesitant - like a child practicing') is after having been joined by the Vibraphone Harp and solo Violin suddenly violated with unprecedented brutality by the rest of the orchestra which virtually 'lies in wait - panting to pounce'. But eventually calm and order is restored. The finale is a crazy rondo of sorts.

This is the original version of Winternacht for 7 instruments composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 1976-78. Programme Note: Winternacht was written in 1976-78 and the title was taken from a poem by the Austrian poet Georg Trakl. The four movements which are all very precise and dreamingly poetic are almost classical in terms of clarity and discipline in orchestration and form: hence the dedication of the third movement to Igor Stravinsky. However the music has a strong impressionistic quality as well: four introverted still lives of the velvety dark iceness of a silvery winter night (one can veritably sense the fairy-tale-like sleigh ride in the two outer movements). The secondmovement is dedicated to the eccentric lithographer M.C. Escher and the first and last movements are both dedicated to Georg Trakl. As in the well-known orchestral work Stratifications we can enjoy Abrahamsen's fascination with having several events occur simultaneously: a thoughtful as well as playful multilayered quality mirrors the poetic and mysterious worlds of painting literature nature and most important of all: music. 1983 For mixed choir SATBB Orig version 'Choral Hymn': WH32008 for SATB Per Norgard 's A Choral Hymn (On Frostbound Earth) from 1983 for Mixed Choir SATBB. Based on 'Choral Hymn' and a fragment of 'The Year'. Orig. version 'Choral Hymn': WH32008 for SATB Orig. DK version 'Korsalme': WH32007 Programme note When in 1975 I had finished composing my 3rd Symphony (begun in 1973) I wrote three simple melodies for two psalm texts by Ole Sarvig The Year and Choral Hymn. One of these was later included in the Danish Hymnbook under the title aret - Som aret gar (The Year). Thesethree Sarvig tunes were derived from the same material as the second movement of the symphony and could be harmonized together in several different tempo relationships at the same time - like fractals. This inspired me to write several choral and instrumental works in the following decade based on these melodies for instance Frost Psalm Winter Cantata Cycles Cantica and this A choral hymn (On frostbound earth) all coloured by the Nordic and mythic poem The year by Sarvig the beginning of which goes : The passing year will pass its deep So shall our mind reach winters sleep. And as the tree stands leafles bare Is winters realms: our minds aware. - Ole Sarvig (translated by Helen and Ole Sarvig) Per Norgard
