In First Snow the women’s Voices programmatically mimic the falling layering motion of fresh snow joined by the men whose Voices recall the hardship of the winter to come. In Hermit Peak one SATB Chorus moves in hymn-like progression while the other SATB Chorus musically skips about suggesting the fleeting energies of living things and of weather. Contemporary Danish composer and conductor Bo Holten is the founder of the Danish Vocal groups Ars Nova and Musica Ficta and he has written extensively for Voices as well as producing concerti symphonies oper chamber music and film scores. His words describe the beauty and struggle of the immigrant experience there. The original version is for soprano accompanied by five strings harp celesta and percussion. The second version (1965) is for soprano and chamber orchestra with 22 strings. The work is dedicated to the memory of the composer’s father Erling Nordheim. Transition transformation and existential wonder as evoked by these lines in the second movement resonate sympathetically seemed to be etched into the verymusical fabric as well. Nordheim's free-tonal language with its dissonant intervals is employed effectively to punctuate Aftonland's powerful expressivity. Beyond the contours and importance of the lines however the instrumentation too probes broad expressive registers and is highly foregrounded in its own right. The Deserted Churchyards was commissioned by Lerchenborg Music Days and is dedicated to Louise Lerche-Lerchenborg. In 1765 the young German doctor Johann Friedrich Struensee arrives at the Danish Court in Copenhagen as newly appointed Royal Physician for the mentally unstable King Christian the VII. Close to the power and the young Queen Caroline Mathilde Struensee dreams of making a better world for everyone. As time goes by he usurps still more power and tries to reform Denmark according to the ideas of the Enlightenment. Struensee engages in a fatal romantic relation to Caroline Mathilde and his bold grasp of power ends bloody.
