Per Norgard 's Libra was originally a commission-work for Guitar but during the compositional process a vocal part was liberated from the musical material a part which could be provided with words from the Rudolf Steiner's poem 'Libra'. Gradually two choruses and ten movements were created around this part and texts from David's Psalms were added. Libra is one of the most characteristic works in the row of the composer's 'hierachic music' works: Slow and rapid versions of the same melodies series of accords are coupled in continuously new constellations but always based in harmony. Thisis only possible because of the hierachic nature of this music.

Quartetto Sereno - String Quartet No.21 Op.197 (op. posth.) by Vagn Holmboe. Holmboe's last quartet work which is unoffi­cially also String Quartet No. 21 was the last work he ever composed and was unfinished on his death in 1996. His pupil Per Norgard has finished the quartet and himself characterizes his contribution by saying that the score existed in an only partly completed form which could however be written out with only a few cases of doubt. With only two movements and a play­ing time of about nine minutes it is at its exist­ing length the shortest of Holmboe's stringquar­tets. The first movement takes the form of one long arch in a rocking triple time which constantly shifts among different tempo and pulse sensations. At the same time the rhythmic en­ergy increases until the movement in a faster Con moto tempo accelerates to a more flowing 12/8 time coloured both rhythmically by cross-­rhythms in duple time and timbrally by harmon­ics in the viola. In its middle section Con fuoco the movement culminates in both tempo and expression until it falls calm in brief recapitula­tions in reverse order of the first two sections. The rocking feeling continues in the second movement but now at a more extroverted level from the outset Allegro and pizzicato. The en­ergy builds up further as the mood intensifies to Con fuoco while all instruments go over to bowed playing but like the first movement this movement ends Adagio here however not as a gradual attenuation but through a sudden shift in tempo to a calm imitative passage before the movement slowly thins out to the almost inaudible through a last dense open sounding chord with a brief violin solo above it. Completed in 1977 Le Tombeau de Pere Igor or The Tomb of Father Igor is a fabulous Chamber work for Cello Clarinet and Piano by Karl Aage Rasmussen one of the most important post-war Danish composers. This set for his terrific piece includes both the Cello and the B flat Clarinet parts. The full score is also available (KP00193). Writing a piece of music for Christmas . . . It's difficult. We all know Christmas carols and hymns which in words and music express joy expectation and light. Christmas and Christmas carols are the greatest joy of childhood - for me (for many others probably also) one of the strongest experiences of fulfilment peace and happiness. Were I not able to write a piece for Christmas then the thought of Christmas would even so create inspiration. The angels' song the heavenly light which is spread over the world - the world which is not evil or false and hollow but which is subjected to mankind's eternal restless endeavour.The work is dedicated to Ensemble 2000.PeterBruun. Anders Brodsgaard's Attacca for Piano solo was composed in 1992 . Programme note Anders Brodsgaard's JOKER ATTACCA and REQUIEM: 'Joker' was inspired by Keith Jarret's piano style parti-cularly as it unfolds in his famous concerts of solo improvisation. The title comes from the fact that a kind of 'joker effect' is built-in in the rhythmic play which disturbs the 'arithmetical problem' and forces the music to continue everytime a four-layered polyrhythm is about to come out.'Attacca' is a wild(ly) uncontrolled outburst which startsin the highest layers ofcloud of four rows of overtones and gradually falls down in a more differentiated diatonic domain.'Requiem' was composed in the memory of my father and the piece is about 'hearing voices'.

Per Nørgård NUIT DES HOMMESThe night of mankind - the night of men is a kind of opera in so far as it is about a stagework with sung accompanied by both acoustic and electronic instruments - a stagework in two acts and approx. 20 pictures. However if you by opera think of its dramatic type with people in one or more conflicts mutual and with themselves - well then Night of mankind probably has to reckon among another not yet categories genre.It may well be two named person that perform (Alice and Vilhelm) but the opera does not deal with their possible mutual tensions but instead of their common limitless intensity which first make them in harmony walk the dangerouspaths on which the enthusiasm lead them and afterwards divides them as now radically changed figures: from the individual woman to the war correspondent in demagogic - ecstatic outburst of feelings - from the mans human to the soldiers unhuman everyday.
